Does anyone have any suggestions on which unit to buy for extensive trail riding, etc., in unfamiliar territory? Maybe even a suggestion for a corresponding RAM mount? The wife may want to use it for her hiking excursions, too.

    Thanks!

Lowrance has a few options on the market and that is what the desert racers are using. The most cost effective alternative is a smart phone with GPS and the Polaris Ride Command app. User update-able maps with all trail restrictions, attractions, food, gas and anything in between are all listed. The app also works where there is no cell service. I’ve been using it for 3 years now and it works great and just keeps getting better.

I switch between an old Helix 5 for summer muddin and the Helix 7 from my boat for Ice fishing. I use a 2.25 Ram mount with the base drilled and bolted directly to the steering column clamp. Solid as a rock and in a perfect location for viewing.

Are you using a different mapping software or just a basemap? Didn’t know they offered anything. You can get offroad trail map software for Lowrance and I believe Garmin now.

During the summer I typically just use the standard basemap and just make a trail to follow back in case I get lost. During ice season I use Lakemaster.

Nice setup! That looks perfect for the ice fishing setup I’m looking for. I, too, have a Helix 7 for the boat that I want to mount on the wheeler this winter. I see it’s a 2.25 (thanks for that), but is there a specific mount that attaches directly to the Helix I should look for? Thanks, Munch!

Eagle, thank you for that! I just downloaded it and it looks like it will be just what I need.

I use my i-phone in a lifeproof case with the ride command app. I have a lifeproof case holder mounted to a ram mount on my handlebars. I plug the phone into the cig light for power so it lasts all day. I do wrap the lifeproof case in a plastic baggie and pull it tight to keep the dust/mud off the case (just as extract protection).

Works great for me, and I have my phone should I need it.
