I have been looking into buying a flasher. But I am fishing mostly shallow water. I have heard of people having trouble using them in shallow water and by shallow I mean 4 to 8 ft. I was wondering if this is true and if so is there a specific unit that works better in that depth range?

The Vexilar FLX-28 boasts its capabilities in shallow water when equipped with the pro view transducer.
I have one but never use it in shallow water. Mostly deep for me.
I’m sure others will fill you in on their experiences with it.
December 16, 2015 at 9:03 am #1585143When that shallow your cone is small. I usually have the duecer in the center of the hole, and only deep enough that the duecer is wet. That increases my come size compared to having the duecer at the bottom of the hole like many do.
That method widens any cone.
I use a bird788 or marcum vx1
4′ deep no problem.Using a bottom zoom feature makes lines bigger too, especially when shallow
But I’ll see a whole lot more the deeper i go

Both work well for all around fishing including shallow in my opinion. I don’t know if you’re using a shelter but if you are then in 4 ft of water I would just sight fish.

I plan on hitting a lot of inland lakes over weekends also which are deeper and is the reason I want one. But I don’t live close to any that are worth driving too on the weekdays because I have school. But lake st.clair is my backyard so I wouldn’t mind using it there on warmer days when you don’t need a shack and I won’t have to deal with a sore neck looking down the hole. Lol.
December 16, 2015 at 11:00 am #1585181I’ve had Vex’s only, Fl-8 and Fl-22 so I can’t compare to other brands.
Here’s what I’ve noticed. Make sure the transducer is the wider of the possible angles. Meaning if they offer a 9 or 19, get the 19.
Second thing that is nice when in weeds is Vex’s low power setting. Haven’t used it very much but on a couple days it made all the difference. Was side by side with a buddy using an H-bird. I consistently caught fish while he pretty much was just frustrated.
x2 on the sight fishing if possible. Fun and much more successful on days when they are finicky.

This is absolutely true if you don’t fish near the weeds. If you do fish near weeds, you’ll need the narrower beam. The wide cone angle will pickup all the surrounding weeds and not be able to see your lure or the fish.
Dual beam would be a good choice.
