    Hey Gents

Any opinions on the best LOTW resort if you intend to strike out on your own. Got he snowmobile and the gear – just looking for a head start.

    Thanks

Any of the places on Wheeler’s point will get you right on the snowmobile trail. If you’re looking for a sleeper house further out on the lake, take your pick off of any of the roads up there.

I would not waste any time flying out on the lake. Especially this time of the year. Start looking shallower 8 to 12 ft of water both for a day bite and a night bite. Night bite will produce good fish this time of the year. I would be heading out of Morris or wheelers

We went out of Long Point recently and took the Ranger to North Arnesons reef. Plenty of fish and very quiet. Gotta traverse (no pun intended) over a few pressure ridges, but nothing very sketchy.

Heck if you have a sled just go to the public landing at wheelers point and go anywhere without having to pay the access fee

So many people are battling and driving 2 extra hours across the lake to be 25 miles out, just to catch dinks. Don’t be those guys

    ^This.

Sometimes the race to be on “fresh ground” or “X number of miles out” drives you right by the best fishing. We’ve slowly learned by trial and error that this happens on both LOTW and Red. The best fishing I’ve had on Red was the same week many accesses opened to single axle wheelhouses towed by Side by Sides and everyone was flying out as far as they could go, and racing towards center bar. We set up in 8′ of water and absolutely hammered fish the entire time.

I’m no LOTW expert, but the best fishing I have ever had up there was around 18-20′ both early ice and the middle of the season as well. We had dinks mixed in, but average sized fish were 16″ or so with at least a 50/50 split of walleyes versus just mainly sauger out deeper. Driving 20+ miles out for 12″-13″ saugers seems crazy.

I’ve been to Ken-Mar-Ke Resort a few times and had good experiences. Pretty decent cabins and Friday night tacos at the restuarant/bar are good. Short drive to multiple resorts to access the lake/roads.

Young’s bay at the NW angle. If you don’t want to cross the border to get to the angle I’d suggest long point.
