So many people are battling and driving 2 extra hours across the lake to be 25 miles out, just to catch dinks. Don’t be those guys
^This.
Sometimes the race to be on “fresh ground” or “X number of miles out” drives you right by the best fishing. We’ve slowly learned by trial and error that this happens on both LOTW and Red. The best fishing I’ve had on Red was the same week many accesses opened to single axle wheelhouses towed by Side by Sides and everyone was flying out as far as they could go, and racing towards center bar. We set up in 8′ of water and absolutely hammered fish the entire time.
I’m no LOTW expert, but the best fishing I have ever had up there was around 18-20′ both early ice and the middle of the season as well. We had dinks mixed in, but average sized fish were 16″ or so with at least a 50/50 split of walleyes versus just mainly sauger out deeper. Driving 20+ miles out for 12″-13″ saugers seems crazy.
