Fall Lake’s area is 4/5 outside of the BWCA, 1/5 inside. It hosts an excellent habitat for many species. I fish there several times each winter and several times each summer. Like any other lake it has its good and bad days. It is what I would consider a medium tannic stained lake with a beautiful waterfall feeding into it. There is a lot of structure with a few holes that range between 30-40 feet deep, otherwise most of the lake’s center maxes out around 24 feet. It is long easy to west and has current in and out. Walleye get over 30″ smallmouth boast over 23″, pike range from hammer handles to over 45″. Perch average 12″ and fat, a guy could probably catch smaller ones if he tried, but those are the ones that bite when trying for slabs and eyes. Oh yeah and the pies average 11-13″. Crappies over 16″ are caught regularly enough but seldom consistently. It is a beautiful lake with a wilderness feeling. In the summer you can count on finding boats fishing below the falls on the south end, and canoes going north on the east end. The boundary waters portion of the lake is easy to get a 25hp motor permit for. And the bite is best from sun up till sunset, not much of a night bite. It isn’t as good for fishing trophy walleye as its neighbors in the Farm/White Iron chain, but it doesn’t have a slot either. More big fish in Farm-White Iron, more eaters in Fall. There are a few resorts on the lake and a large campground conveniently named Fall Lake Campground. The waterfall can be hiked to and there is a parking lot at its trailhead. Sorry it took me a few days to see this… Trout Opener is chaotic in Ely!
