Me and two buddies had plans to hunt morels and do some shooting on Friday, then wake up early and hit the water on opener… Well we ended up sleeping in a bit, and getting a late start due to some unexpected errands in the morning.
We hit the water around 9:45 opening morning and were tied into the first walleye at 9:50. The day started off really well as we had 5 fish in the box in short order. Things slowed when the wind picked up and switched, and we had to move, picking off walleyes here and there in each spot. We finally settled in on a large undulating flat and let the wind rock us over it, and that paid off pretty well. We ended up going through 5 scoops of shiners, caught 50+ fish, and ended up keeping 21 fish, a mix of walleyes and pike. Phelp’s Half-Faced jigs and spot-tails were the ticket.
I hope everyone had a safe and successful opener!
