Bemidji Area Walleye Stocked Private Lake

There is a “Private” Lake just north of Bemidji that can only be accessed by snowmobile or 4wheeler in the summer. Perch Lake is on state trail 279 just west of Sandy Lake. From Bemidji, you’d go north on 89, West on 24, and north on 513. There is no survey map, so you’ll have to look at Google satellite images to see where you’re at on the lake. There are 3 deep bowls. Most of the Walleyes sit on the north east corner of the middle bowl. Rest are on the south west corner of the south bowl. The guy who owns the cabin dumps 3000-5000 walleyes in there about every 3-4 years. Only way to access is on the south east third of the lake as it’s public land. Rest is private. Most owned by the cabin on the north end. BIG eyes, pike, and bass.

Back story: My former boss owns the cabin. Used to get to use the place once in a while. He’d take me up there occasionally too. Generally I never give up my fishing spots, but he made me a bunch of monetary promises that were never fulfilled, sold the company, gave me some sob story about the sell price being too low to keep his word, then told me about his new boat and dumping another 5000 eyes in there last week. Eff him. I consider this the start of getting my money’s worth. Enjoy!!

Option 1: Lawyer up. Some oral contracts are legally binding.

Option 2: Get over it. Being hellbent on revenge is going to hurt you more than him in the long run. He’s clearly doing just fine after casting you aside, and here you are creating accounts on fishing websites trying to get people to go and drill a few holes on his private lake. Advantage: Bossman.

Disagree with the “high road” guys. There’s no such thing. It’s usually an excuse for the guy who got the short-end to live with himself for cowering and not taking action.

Obviously, I’m not talking violence or illegal activity, here. Nothing you’ll regret later. Think it through. Pick your spots. The opportunity always presents itself.

I think this is a good one. You’re not “giving” up anything. It sounds like this lake isn’t as private as the landowner likes to think it is (what kind of moron stocks a lake with public access expecting nobody else to fish it).

Bottom line, don’t write checks your rear end cant cash. Nothing worse than a fraud.

Just a question here, but isn’t stocking a public lake without a permit illegal? Maybe turn him in on that. I’m sure the fine would urine him off more then some guys taking out some walleye. He obviously values money, so hit him where it hurts.

Whatever the op’s motivations are don’t matter to me I’m not going to judge him. Sounds like it’s only private to the guy who is stocking it. There are a ton of lakes around here that have no access other than wheeler or snowmobile or even portage and anybody who knows is welcome to use it as long as you’re not crossing private owned property to access it. Guy wants to stock it that’s his business but it doesn’t turn any public land into his private property because of it.

I’m guessing many of the locals know where this spot is and fish it. Thanks for the info Matt. Can you get a side by side down to the lake and can you get around on it without tracks?

Is this the Perch lake between Sandy and Iverson lakes by chance?

If he’s putting in 3000+ fish, I’m sure the people he’s buying them from have checked into the permit already.

Since you are a new member Matt, don’t use the @ sign. The system thinks you are spamming the site.

Carter: No twist. Just getting my money worth.

David: posted the few I have on my phone. There are hog pike in there. Biggest eye to come out of there so far is 24.

Ice Cap: side by side shouldn’t be an issue. Been out there on a 4 wheeler plenty of times. Here is the lat/long: (47.7006975, -95.0978921)

DNR put 350,000 walleye fry in there in 2011.

Yep. Also, the cabin owner there put in 3000 finerglings in 2016, and just last month put in 5000 more as the provider retired.

I’m not really understanding how you’re getting your moneys worth. If it were me, I’d probably focus my time and money legally.

Doing this is just burning bridges. If he files bankruptcy you’d be able to make a claim. This won’t help.

It also makes me wonder what kind of “deal” you had in the first place. If this is you’re only route of retribution, then I’d tend to believe the deal wasn’t legitimate to begin with.

I don’t know the details and two sides to every story. That said, I’ve had a situation with a realtor who screwed me over. Did I sue, yes. Did I win, yes. Did that matter, not at all. If this is as claimed, I’m sympathetic to the OP.

If we could just get one more new member to complete the circle of information on this we would have something seriously real on our hands, that’s all I ask. neutral

    And that shuttle service.. jester
