I just recently picked up the “new” Beaver Dam Walleye tip up and it’s no different than the other ones. They claim on the site that it’s spins smoother and is bigger but compared to my other ones its the same. I’ve also noticed the quality isn’t the same. My other ones that are 15 years old spin way better.

Really sad to see the quality go down since Acme Tackle now owns them.

I just bought 2 on sales at Fleet for 29.00 each. Thought the price was too good to pass up. I have over 20 of them already. Most have been bent or need to be repacked. I have about 10 that work decent. The 2 new ones are similar to the older ones but I do like the ruler on the new ones. I also noticed they don’t seem to spin as well as some of the order ones. There is a bit of resistance.

I purchased my beaver dams when I was a teenager in the mid 80s. They have never been relubed and run as good today as they day they were purchased. And yes they have iced lots of Northern, walleye and bass over the years!

I originally bought 1 online for 29.00 too and returned it because I saw the advertising for this one. Well now I’m kicking myself because they are basically the same. Advertising 1 and me 0 haha

I have heard that newer ones (within the last 5 years) are not as good as any older ones as well

Personally, I dont buy them. the cost is too high for not being easily able to fix/lube yourself at home or having to buy new shafts every few years. I will stick to tipups I can lube myself as needed and they spin freely

I have never seen a Beaver Dam Tip Up you could not repack yourself. The originals has the spool soldered on. The newer ones have a nut to remove the spool. Either way its takes under a minute to get the spool on/off. I have 2 bought in the 1970s and never needed to replace the shaft. Yes – used every year since….including tomorrow. I have 11 of them but the 2 “originals” are still my favorite. I couldn’t tell you how many times I repacked them….30??? maybe.

The new one I just picked up does not have a nut but my older ones do.

Some tip ups spin great at room temp. but not so good in the cold. Just bought a BD myself so not an expert-but check for yourself in the cold.

Beaver Dams are the gold standard in my book, I have 3 from the 80’s that work great. Anyone heard of or tried a Bloodknot tip up ?

I love the old beaver dams, I have a large handful of them. 8 or ten, I got them at a garage sale for 2 bucks each. I also like the cheap yellow frabil ones. They always work good to.

I’m the opposite, I think Beaver Dam tip ups are obscenely overpriced and not even close to as smooth as the good old HT $15-$20 unit. I bought a couple Beaverdam‘s when I was first starting out 50+ years ago but there’s no way in the world I do it again today. I also think frabil are junk. You don’t have to pile on, I get a lot of grief for my opinion of beaver dams. But that opinion comes from lots of tip up fishing. No matter what brand you buy, you have to lube them on occasion or they’re all going to be sticky.

I’ve had better luck with Blu Lube than Frabil brand but those are all I’ve seen. Blu Lube works great. Be careful, you can over pack them too and make a big mess. Lots of videos out on how to do it. Clean the tube good. Just squirt a little lube in the bottom of the tube and put your finger on the top hole. Now start easing the tube up the bottom until the pressure makes lube start to come out around the tube on the bottom, release your finger to take pressure off, put your finger back on top and push it up a little further and keep doing that until you’re all the way to the top.after you do one or two you’ll get used to how much lube to squirt in, but the worst that can happen is you’ll just force a bunch out of the top.
