Boy, so I wish I had kept my cool a bit longer last night after scouting turkeys. It was almost dark and we were only a couple of miles from dropping off my buddy that starts his turkey hunt this Wednesday. We were driving past an open power line, you know the kind with the pastures under them… I was watching the road and had looked to the south when my buddy exclaimed “look at the bear!!!” I was just about past him on the north side, but I caught a glimpse of what I believe may be the biggest one I have ever seen!!!

Backed up and tried to get a P.poor pic from my cell phone, thinking that my better camera was in the truck, but it was hidden from view at the time and I couldn’t put my hands on it. Didn’t want to miss an opportunity, so I actually drove down the P.line access road to get closer. As you can tell by posting the best pic, I never get a decent one. He went into the woods and we went to the other side to see if we could intercept him on the other side of the narrow strip. Not so much, but when we went around he was up the field 500 yards or so, so we went up to see if we could a better pic the second time… again not so much.

Guessing this thing was 500#’s even for a spring bear!!! Beauty coat, easily over 4′ high and wide!!! I think he could have been pushing 600 and certainly will during the fall, but it was the highlight of the day!!!

Keep an eye on him…Olivia is a point or two away from drawing her bear tag and she wants her first one with a bow!

Mark, your right about that pic. had to squint to see the blob.

Looks like you were real close to me. If that’s where I am thinking. There is a bait real close.

Ohh, did you have your permits for being over this way

    Steve:

I was south of ya on 47 south of Lake Tom. I was assuming he was a large boar and scouting for a sow. We were close, within a 100 yards and closed the gap by driving on the power line road. Did it twice, the lab in the back of my truck thinking she was a walker, plott or something.

Figured you were in one of the 3 spots. I don’t mess with the baits there anymore because of the wolves. The big swamp SW of there we call the wolf swamp! One of my partners still runs them baits, just to tempt fate I think. A lot of bear in that area. It’s just scary to me to hunt them there. The last one we harvested last year was very close to that pic. The big guy came in a few hours earlier that day, and let a 200 pounder sneak in. He won’t be doing that twice though

    Lot more birds that way!
