I tried using the magnum on the bow eye in a heavy chop on Winnebago and didn’t like it as much as running the small one. It slowed me WAY down, but it also caused a surging that made it tough to control the steering. It may work well in flatter water, but the small has always worked well enough for me to not need the big one.

On my old boat, with a 75hp, I could slow my trolling down to around 1.6 or 1.8 using the small sock.

Good info. I have the magnum waiting for a test run but I may end up going to the smaller socks for the trolling applications and use the magnum for drifting. We’ll see how my boat reacts. I have a 90ph on a Lund Explorer.

This Bear was shot by A friend and Fellow IDO member Todd Betterley from Hastings mn. The story was written by Todd,
    Congratulations on a great Bear
Perryville, Alaska Brown Bear Hunt. Specialized Guide Service, Bud Willard. 10 Day Hunt

First day spotted 23 bear, best day for the guide prior to this was 14 bear. The bears were on fish and up in the foothills on berries. Spotted 1 bear estimated at 9-10’ too deep in the alders to pursue.

Second day hunted the same area and spotted 14 bears with one possible shooter spotted in the berries late morning. Winds were light and we were busted as we tried our first stalk. Not a huge bear but a fun stalk.

Third day hunted the same area and spotted 11 bears at first light. Mid-morning two large bears were spotted about 3 miles out and we decided to take a closer look. As we got within 500 yards we measured up the two boars and determined one was definitely a potential shooter and the stalk was on.

Half way to the targeted bear we ran into a sow and three cubs and this changed the few hundred yard stalk to a half mile adventure through the Alders and stream bottoms. We popped up out of the stream bottom at 87 yds from the bear. The other bear was 200 yds to the right and the sow and cubs were 400 yds to the left. The guide said he would watch these bears to assure they didn’t come for us when I shot and for me to just focus on my bear.

My first shot was at 87 yds with a broadside, double lung shot with a 375 H&H. He bit and swatted at the impact and I put another one into him immediately. That’s when it got exciting, he spotted us and charged us taking 5 more shots (2 of mine 3 from the guide, both 375’s) and dropped 30 yds in front of us. A few people asked if I needed to change my pants but it was one of those moments were everything was perfectly focused and in slow motion. 8 ½’ Alaska Peninsula Brown Bear and my absolute dream hunt. There are bigger bears but not a better hunt anywhere!!

All four of my shots hit him. 1st shot double lung, second shot back a bit (mostly guts)3rd shot a bit back quartering to the opposite rear leg (both of these shot were farther back as we were trying not to hit the head)4th shot and final shot was an inch away from the first shot.
The guide said early in the trip that “the bears can be dead on their feet but still go all out for 90 seconds so get as much lead into them as you can”
    I added a couple photos
