This was my first try at Bear hunting but I am no stranger to it as I have helped bait many times and have a few Uncles who have harvested some nice Bears. With a 1 year old boy at home I knew baiting for weeks straight was going to not be an option I did some searching on line and found my guy, a small operation with awsome shot opertuntiy rates.
My hunt took place near Grand Rapids,MN a beautiful place just starting to be touched with falls splendor of colars. The Maples are really showing a fire red on the way home from “Gods Country” this morning. My first day was very windy with nothing more than a bunch of chipmunks visiting the bait stalked by a couple of Grey Fox.
The next morning upon waking I was greeted but temps in the upper 30s!And a beautiful high pressure morning, I thaught to myself “This is the day”! In stand at 3 pm I was greeted by the same munks and fox as the day before but as the sun started to dip low I could hear a heavy stick break to the east of the pile while later another to the south and the one to the west. I knew there was somthing big near the bait weather it was going to come in or not was the question After about 45 minutes with no sounds a large dark figure appeared to the north of the bait and was approaching fast, I flip the swith on the camera and make sure I hit the record button, by this time the bear had just broke cover and was moving for the bait. I cocked the hammer on my T.C Triumph and prepared for the shot. My goal was to remain calm and roll as much footage as possible before dropping the hammer. My plans were cut short when the Bear grabbed a peice of Beaver meat and appeared to be ready to split. Not wanting to watch my bear walk away I let the smoke fly and dropped it on the spot. My 50 cal Barnes Bullet had hit one shoulder blade broke a rib clipped the heart and took out both lungs before exiting through another rib and the other shoulder.
The whole deal was sweetened when I walked up to find a much bigger bear than I had thought and it was BROWN! Its not a light brown its reel dark but its a long ways from the standard Black. Giving it the name “Dark Chocolate” Live weight was 185 and it taped around 5’1″. I am getting a 3/4 mount done with the cape, a hemp necklace with the rear claws and the skull is to be Beetle cleaned. Thank you for reading and safe seasons to you all.
