I headed up to northern Minnesota on August 31st. The day before season started, (so late because i couldnt take off to much days of collage). After the 365 mile drive that took 6 hours I arrived at camp around 6:15 pm. The next day we started to run baits. We had six people in our group hunting so we split up 3 and 3 and each ran 9 out of the 18 baits. The first day i believe we had 10 or so hit. That night one of the guys shot a smaller boar, and that was the only one seen on opener. Day 2, baited again and had about the same amount hit. Only 3 of us out of 5 went out because of the rain. Only one was seen and my buddy missed it at 20 yards with the T/C Omega! Must of had bear fever! The next night only a sow and two cubs was to be seen. On the fourth day the bear started to show up more. 6 were seen total. One was shot. It was a 150 pound sow shot by my friends dad. My friend had one at 5 yards but could only have a clear view of his head also that night. My aunt now seen two bears both that wear kind of a chocolate color. But she decided to pass on both. The fifth night which was my last night to hunt my aunt took me to the bait she sat the night before. Being my last day of the hunt and not even seeing a live bear i was getting frustrated. As the night went on we saw nothing. Until 7:09 my aunt tapped me and pointed behind the bait. A few second later i see a dark chocolate head coming my way. Within 20 seconds of seeing it i took the shot, and drilled it through both lungs. i used a Ruger lever action .44 mag. Mainly because the other two guys who got a bear used the same gun. Must be good luck eh? Well it was because the bear only went 30 or so yards and let out the death moan. I was so excited we didnt even get the others to help track because i had to see it, and i couldnt wait for them to get off stand.
I guess ground shrinkage goes in hand with bears like it does bears to, as it seemed way bigger when i shot. Either way for my first bear it was a perfect one.
It was 122 pounds live weight and dressed out at 103. So probaly just a young sow. But it was a beautiful dark chocolate color that will look great on the wall!
Either way bear hunting was a great experience and i would like to have another chance in the future at it. And i thank my aunt and uncle for inviting me up this year, and also for my aunt being right next to me as i shot my first bear.
There are still 3 hunters up there from our group so ill keep you updated.
