Other than a logging operation working through my first bait, everything seems to be in order for this years bear hunt. I have a brother and father that have tags and this will probably be my last opportunity for a few years to do this baiting thing. I get a real charge out of getting the pictures and you really never know what is going to show up. So here goes with the first set!!! These all seem to be the same little guy…

So hoping that the 10:05 picture is not that of a cub… Although it might be an indication of how small the little guy is…

Re-baited this a.m. and got cut into the second bait, it is up and running now, but without camera at this moment. Perhaps I’ll get out tomorrow a.m. to install second cam, we’ll see how late the resort guests keep me at the bar this evening…

Oh yea, the last pic might be that vaunted jackelope!!!

Thanks guys!!! Getting these pics really is the basis of motivation to keep baiting for others or even myself. I really get a kick out of the trail cam stuff!!! Its just a little different to get to see bears, when most are looking for deer/turkey. Even when doing this for bear, the unique pics like the snowshoe hair, the shot passing on my bro’s hunt from two years ago, bobcat, woodcock, mice, etc. are the really neat things we get to see rolling through its lens area. Hope to get another cam up on the second bait in the next day or two and get pics from the first again Thurs./Fri. More soon…

This is too funny. Look at how little that guy is!!! Can you see the rock sticking out both sides of his little body!!! I did the reference pic of my full grown puppy at 100#. I am pretty sure that he is on his own now as his pic hasn’t shown up with a bigger bear. After looking at today’s pull this little guy will be getting referenced again.

The first several are of the little guy, but they do get progressively bigger. The pic after the lead where he is removing the stone, is of his back side taking off. I think he dropped the rock on his foot and he had to go!!! More coming and a really nice one showed up. I have to get them cropped and will get them up from both cams.

Sorry took so long to get some pics up… Bears have been in every time I have been to the baits. Logging operation puts a pinch on the timing of entry to the land as the logging trucks loading platform is at the entry to the piece of land. They are not going all the way back to the second bait, but are going to be close to the first bait. Chief logger has told me that he probably because of the grade where the first bait is will leave that area alone. I think the abundance of different bears is a result of them skirting the operation. Some good size bear in the pics so far and it gets better!!!

Still got a couple left in this set and tried to put up any thing that happened at a different time. The bigger bear did get a few more views though… Oh yea and that snowshoe hair made it through again… Got a wolf shot or two coming as well.

First one is a potential average bear (equals shooter) and I think is legal, second one will get a pass this season!!!

Gotta love those woodcock, I know my dogs sure get a kick out of chasing them!!! I get like 8 or 9 pics of this little boar for like 10 minutes, then boom the biggest bear I have gotten a picture of doing this three years out of the last five. I think the B&W’s may not be the same bear as the last two colors, though I haven’t studied it enough to be sure. Either way even if it is the same bear, nice to know it is traveling during the daylight!!!

To finish up the roll from above this little scutter was in early and then was replaced by this nicer bear. Going to try to get caught up a little bit here.

So many different bear encounters that it is tough to leave the start of any of them out. Especially if they are good sized bear. Got my first wolf pics on the cam and he should probably be put down for peeing in my neighborhood!!! Also the last color pic I believe from future photos not posted may be the old star bear from two years ago. More in a bit, got to do some downsizing.

While I got over 60 pictures from the second bait, there were only two bear encounters providing the bulk of the pics. Not sure, but at first blush, I believe this bear to be the same… Also this is the same wolf from the earlier pictures at the first bait.

Staying with the theme of every encounter, this particular set of days provided lots of activity from a lot of different bears… And our wolf gets back into the act trying to dig the tube out of the ground. Each of the first three pics the visitor get progressively bigger. In fact based on the belly I going to guess that we are looking at the star bear, even though we haven’t seen the star just yet… The two wolf pictures show that he was in there for about 45 minutes and if you were to see the entire sequence you could watch the logs on the right side of the tube get moved. Last two pics are of the same bear, just much more clarity on the second pic. I have 9 more pics from this sequence up next…

Little guy then a raccoon (see his tail), then the next pic he comes back through and I thought I had a bobcat, but after looking it over a few more times, I noticed his bushy little tail, bummer was hoping to get another bobcat again!!! Then 4 and 5 are of little guys, but can you say shooter of pic #6 and 7!!! Again nice to see a large bear in the daylight!!! Last two pics pretty anticlimactic, eh…

Have they had any activity while on stand yet Mark? I have heard of some real bruisers getting taken already. One by Bowler that was over 700. Not sure if that was dressed or whole. Another up by Park Falls that dressed 457. That one never came to the bait. The guy was sitting over the bait and it came out into an adjacent hay field and he was able to take the shot before it made it across the field. It was actually going away from the bait. Then another near Tomahawk that dressed 429. Well good luck the rest of the year.

After not having seen anything on opening night, pulled 82 YO father off the stand at 7:43 p.m. Got back with pics the night following and found out a bear had uncapped the bait practically while we getting ready to leave at 7:59!!! Got some nice ones coming in still, just been so busy this year haven’t been able to get caught up posting some nice pics. Brother hasn’t started hunting yet, was going to tonight, but has had some issues to work through before getting back up here!!!

Actually hearing that some baits are not being hit right now and have found out once with brother’s bait and tonight fathers. I was hoping that might make tonight the night for him. Not the best winds and with the logging crew working most real day activity has been on the weekends. They finished their clearcut, we still have bears coming to the baits and during the prime hours, so I am not disgruntled yet!!!

The two posted are a beauty star bear at 250-300 (my best guess) and the second one at well, bigger!!! Enough for now as I have to get father!!!
