Great news Subsequently, some behind the scenes scheming has begun today, on a Fall Northern Manitoba bruin hunt possibly….
Manitoba would be my next highly considered bear hunt destination… Or possibly MN for ease of travel and reduced travel expense.
Anyone have any recommendations of good, reasonably priced guides / outfitters in either MN or Manitoba?
Mike
I can sure recommend my outfitter, but we drive and it is not “ease of travel”…its 18 hours away…
3 flights, customs, layovers… It was fast(er) than driving, but still a PITA. Drive-to hunts (even if the drive is long), are still a bit easier in a sense. No weight restrictions, no checking bags, no getting toothpaste confiscated because its a threat to national security of Canada…
Here is the link to my self-interview 2 minutes after I shot the bear… Video isn’t great, but I’m holding the camera at arms length, shaking the whole time, and lighting stinks. Its pretty funny seeing how jacked up I was, though. Well, I get a chuckle out of it anyway.
pics, story to come…

Newfoundland 2010
I’ll try to be brief… From Chicago – 3 flights and 2.5 hours worth of time zone changes later, we landed in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Weather looked good, but no hunting on Sunday, so we fished that night instead.
Monday was cold and wet – lots of rain… Very cold sit, no bears seen by anyone.
Tuesday – rain out day, too crappy outside to sit. Lots of cards being played. Snowed on us briefly that afternoon. Still a few small snowpacks in the higher elevations.
Wed – much nicer weather – cool and downright windy, but sunny at least and not as cold as Tue. Saw one bear tonight. ~200 lbs, got to about 10 yards, but never had a shot. Rest of the group saw 2 x 500 lb’ers and another 2-300 lb bear. No shots offered… No good shots, anyway, so no arrows were released.
Thursday – No bears seen. Improving weather, much nicer sit. The only other hunter in camp (that isn’t in our group) shot a small bear with his rifle. ~100 lbs if that.
Friday – crunch time. I was the only one to see a bear that night (5 hunter group). Came in at ~8:30. Took a few walks to within 15 yards of the stand, checking me out I guess. Went back to the bait and the fist opportunity I had at a good shot, I took. He stepped out at 25 yards, I put my pin on his shoulder, waited for him to put his front leg forward…. And released. Arrow tracked straight, right behind the upper shoulder, exiting the other side 1/3 of the way up. Perfect broadside pass through shot with the Rage 2 blade. Absolutely perfect, and I was ecstatic. (See video )
Bear took off like he was fired from a cannon. I waited for the guide, and at 10:30 we found him piled up 30 yards from where I shot him. Stiff as a board, he’d been dead for 2 hours…. Rage was awesome, nice to see a very quick, clean kill. No death moan, but I was along the banks of the Humber River, and the low roar might have muted out any sounds that he made.
Only bad part about the deal was that he was rubbed REALLY badly. A very early spring didn’t help anything, and I didn’t realize he was rubbed so bad until I recovered him. Sounded like between the weather and the early spring, the bears either 1) weren’t moving or 2) were rutting and chasing sows, not coming to the bait as much… So it would have been nice to see more bears (and have everyone shoot), but we had a great time regardless.
Video’d a pine martin that night, as well as a “patch fox”. we saw a number of moose and caribou as well. Spectacular scenery, very fast action fishing for small brookies… Interesting landscape, people, and culture… Very cool trip indeed!

In MN, I would give Jonny P a ring or PM (the post above this). I have heard good things about him and his operation!
Congrats on the bear! Looks like you had a great time, love the fish also.
If your interested in Manitoba, let me know. I have hunted the last 10 years with this outfit, best of all, it’s only a 5- 5 1/2 hr drive from my house.
Again, congrats!

Already on my research hit list. PM about to be sent….
PM also sent to Dennis about your outfitter. Loved your “come hunt with me” post. Great stuff!!!
Thanks!
Congratulations whittsend! It looks like you had a very memorable trip! Those are some nice brookies too!
One more… Thanks to Photoshop, two of our other guys were able to harvest as well…
Congrats on a great trip
If Jonny is half as good of a bear guide as he is at fishing. It’s a no-brainer
