Good morning fellas. Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day. Here is my day 1 recap. Didnt have the best weather. Temps were in the low 70’s but wind was blowing around 10 mph with gusts of 20-30. What was really weird, blue skies and clouds but would get sporatic rain showers, I even had about a minute of hail. Got into stand a little before 5 and got settled in for my 5 hour sit. All was quiet except a bunch of chipmunks and squirrels. 6 o’clock rolls around, nothing. 7 rolls by, nothing. 8:00 I hear the unmistakeable twig snap. My first bear sighting. A small boar wanders in and spends a few minutes in the bait. 8:45 another small bear wanders in. Legal shooting hours end at approx 9:50 and on que, my ride shows up. Overall, a slow night. Out of 6 people, 3 got skunked. I saw 2 small bear, another saw 6 bear and 2 good one’s. Last guy saw 4 bear and 1 large bear right at dark but offered no shot. A great dinner of pork steaks and scallop potatos and cheese cake to top off. Lights out at 12:30. Here are a couple more pics. First pic is of the guide trucks getting ready to take their hunters out. Next shot my bait sight. A couple pics of the little bear. More to come.
The weather is always weird in Canada! Thanks for the update Dennis and good luck tonight!
Love the ongoing story / photos…
Getting me all revved up for my trip, coming up soon!
Cool post, thanks! — Keep ’em coming!
Day 2
Weather was a little better today . Partly cloudy with temps in the upper 60’s. Still a bit windy 10 mph with gusts in the 20’s. Got into stand and set-up by 4:30. All quiet until 8:40. Had a nice boar (guessing just under 300#) come into the bait site. Young fella came in, licked a bit of grease off the barrel then left. Getting a little closer to what I am looking for. Small sow that was rubbed really bad came in at 9:20. Another sow in at 9:40. Right at dark, an extremly large sow with 3 yearling cubs. It was a good night for all, one of the hunters from Arkansas shot a 361# boar . All said a done there were 23 bear sightings between 6 hunters . Didnt get very good pictures, my camera battery died . Will try get a pic of the big boar that was killed. Back at you tomorrow morning.
Looks like you are really roughing it on this trip Dennis. Is Meder with you? Good luck and look forward to more from you.
Thanks for the update Dennis! Hopefully big boy will show up for you tonight!
At least this is helping me get my fix a little…. My guy keeps sending me pics too… I can see I am hooked on Canada Bear hunting now… Keep the updates coming Dennis Can’t wait to see “Bear Down !!!!”
Heading to the north country today . A series of baits a couple hours north of the lodge. Very remote area and only gets hunted once a week . I like to call it the “Land of the Giants”. Here are a couple more pics. A great place to fling some arrows. This is his “secret” bait storage. He fills this up 3 times during the spring. 33,000 lbs! Here is a pic of the trailor loaded with bait for 7 bait stations. Wish me luck, next update I hope to have a Big Bear Down …..
That is one big operation! Good luck tonight Dennis! BTW – my opinion of you just went a little down hill knowing that you hang around Big D.
Day 3
A beautiful day. Sunny, with temps in the mid to upper 70’s and light winds. Should be a perfect evening . Made the hour and a half drive to the first bait. By the time I get dropped off and set-up it’s just after 5:00. Time to settle in for my 5 hour sit. Long story short, I didnt see a bear. The bait I was sitting on is known for quality bear, not quantity. Unfortunatly, that night it was known for no bear . Not a very good night for most of the other hunters either. A couple of the other guys saw a couple bear but nothing with any size. Another hunter from Arkansas killed a big dry sow that weighed 291 lbs . The real bad news is that his father hit a XL size bear but could not find it . It was a long night but we will be back at it tommorow . Not much for pics today. First one are some hunters getting ready to be dropped off and the other one is the view from my stand. Getting to crunch time, only 2 sits left. To be continued….
Day 4
Another great day in the north country . Temps in the low 70’s. Nice breeze and cloudy with a slight chance of rain. In my stand just after 5:00. Pretty slow for me, a medium size boar wandered in at 9:30 and that was it . Was a great night for 2 others in camp . One hunter shot another big dry sow, weighed in at 292 lbs . My buddy Jim killed big boar, 349 lbs ! So far, 4 bear killed and the smallest one weighed 291# . Hopefully I can add to the total tonight. Today’s pics: a couple from my stand and the other is my buddy Jim’s bear.
Day 5
Well, it’s crunch time… Day started out looking like it was going to be the perfect day for bear hunting. How wrong could I be . Just after noon, it started to rain. Lucky for me it started to clear up just as we were heading out for the last evenings hunt . In stand at 4:15. Wind was blowing at about 20 mph and gusts around 30 to 40 mph. Long story short, I only saw one small sow at 9:15. 9:45 my ride showed up to pick me up. That concludes my hunt . Was a great week, all other hunters either killed a big bear and the other hunter that didnt tagg out, had 2 chances. All ready looking forward to next year. Time to wrap this up, hope you guys enjoyed the hunt . Until next year….
Sorry to hear that you didn’t connect Dennis but it sounds like you had a great hunt anyways! Truly enjoyed this entire thread and thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Dennis, this was the first place i checked every day! I truly love spring bear hunting, I used to Be a part time guide in Ontario until they put a stop to the spring hunt. I actually have Chipped bones in my left leg from a very protective sow on a spring bear hunt in 1990. The sows during the spring hunt can get very mean trying to protect their cubs!
