Bearplotts asked me the question in one of our posts and last night on the news, the story came through loud and clear:

    Enjoy!!!

One reoccuring theme that has me concerned is this record bear and most of the posted giant bucks come from private land. I wont go any farther except to say that trend has not boded well for many hunters in history around the world.

    [edit – in response to Suzuki’s post…]

IS THERE ANY OTHER KIND OF LAND IN WI?

Seems like thats all we got, just about, barring a few state/national forests around the God’s country. The S. half is nothing but….

Just to clarify, did you mean that it might be somehow a non-legit bear, or were you commenting on how its increasingly harder to find hunting land for the average joe… (or something else??)

how its increasingly harder to find hunting land for the average joe. Wrong format. I retract my statement.

    I am a little confused?
There is no comment or statement that he personally hunted and/or killed that bear. He says “found” the bear through a tip… and other comments that lead me to believe the bear wasn’t harvested by bow or gun…
Anyone else wondering why there are no details of the hunt or kill?

He does say he “shot” the bear….. Kind of weird wording used throughout the story though….

    Some interesting wording for sure.

Thanks for clarifying, Suzuki.. Agreed, I wish we could manufacture some more public land, for sure!!!

I guess I assumed that his buddy was deer hunting or baiting or something, got some pics, and told him to go hunt there. To give the guy credit, we are getting our info from a newsource – print/tv spot… Usually not the most trustworthy informational outlet in my experience……

edit – although upon further review, they sure make it sound like this guy just picked up a roadkill bear on the side of the road or something….

I agree, they were probably being politically correct and not using such gory words as Hunt, Kill or Shot…

As well as seeing the bear in its hide might have been nice. The hide stretched out at the taxidermy shop is still pretty impressive though.

The reporter didn’t look over enthused about reporting a bear kill….

BTW, when they say a bear “squared out” at a certain length, is that the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail after it is skinned?

The outfitter that I am hunting with said they had a bear (black bear) “square out at 8 feet” a few seasons ago.

Could’ve been a depredation tag over a field or something. Guessing there’s next to no crop fields up there, and I’m not sure what WI does for that.

When I hunted in MN, we had corn go “milky” just 5 miles south of us…..some huge fields. Certain farmers had depredation tags to kill quite a few bears and were seeing dozens in the fields per night.

    Just a guess.

At 33 seconds it says “shot” right on the screen. But I agree the narative is a little funny.

It was shot legal on the third day of bait sitter season he did not sit the first day and on the second day he had a smaller one come in and the bear spotted him so he moved his stand so he had better wind and shot it on the third day he sat. It was a sow so the skull was smaller so I havent heard what it green scored yet. Weight wise it is huge for wisconsin but wisconsin records go buy the skull size. He shot it ten minutes from my house and I have some pics on the game cam from it. I am glad he shot it cause he is a nice guy and he deserved it not like some of the people that come up here and expect to shoot a bear in 5 minutes of sitting.
