Area Woman Shoots Bear: The Bear weighs in around 660 pounds

    Posted: Sep 15, 2009 5:27 PM CDT

Barron County (WQOW) – A fourth grade teacher had one incredible story to share with her students this week.

Rhonda Anderson shot a bear in Barron County near Cumberland. The live weight was 658 pounds.

Rhonda says, on Saturday, she was out with a hunting group that included her husband. She says their six-month-old pup tracked the bear which went up into a tree. She says she then shot the bear once.

Rhonda says this was the first bear she’s ever harvested. The DNR told us someone was thinking this might be a record for a bear shot by a woman in Wisconsin. The agency says records are not based on weight but on the size of the skull.

Rhonda, who teaches fourth grade at Birchwood, has already shared her story with her students, who were pretty excited. She says some of them come from bear hunting families too.

I have a couple really cool pics sent by e-mail that I wish I knew how to get here but they were sent on the e-mail and not as a attachment

The picture distorts to bad when blown up on here so I pulled it.

I’m guessing it was no sapling that the monster climbed up??? That is one big bear.

I didn’t know bears that big could even get up a tree. I would have love to see that hunt. It’s actaully probably a good thing that monster went up a tree. I would hate to see what would have happened if the dogs got it cornered on the ground.
