I am up to 6 years preference points in Wisconsin, probably could have gotten a tag for this fall but declined when applying last November. I have never hunted bear before but need to find a guide for 2010 so I know which zone to select when applying this fall. Don’t have alot of days to hunt so don’t know if baiting or hounds is the way to go.
Also what does it cost to get a bear rug with head mount and is the meat good to eat?

    Any ideas here?

The meat is awesome! My girlfriend will even eat it

Rugs run about 700 with the head/claws

Darrin, when I used to apply for Wisc I needed to apply every year or lose my points…can you decline and still keep your points? Or did you simply buy another pref point for 2009?

Darrin, Taxidermist’s will charge around $100.00/ft. for a rug. Yes bear meat is good stuff!

Tom- The whole point thing has changed back and forth a few times. At one time you could apply, and if you forgot a year it was ok, did not loose your points. Then it changed, and you did. Now it is back to a 2yr grace period.

Darin, baiting vs hounds is a personal choice. Yet the success rate with hounds is far higher. With all hunting there is no garuntees. Yet, as a guide I will garuntee a hound hunt. You will find a lot of guides out there that can help. Also a bunch of guys that will do it under the guise of a free guide service. Then whack you for bait and gas. Just be careful not to hook up with one of the weekend warriors that only want your tag to get their dogs a kill. Most of the time these guys don’t get enough training time in on the dogs to have them in shape. I know of one guy like that this year. He has 6 tags to fill. So far he has hunted his dogs 4 times, but he will take you for free. Our dogs have hit the ground 35 times so far, and are ripped. I charge for my hunts. SO have less tags. Who do you think will have more success. We also bait at least 5 days a week. Guys from out of the area cannot do that. So just be careful and screen your potential guides.

As for your points. You may have enough to draw a harvest permit in Zone A&d which allows hound or bait. Also zone C which is bait only. Zone B is still up around 9 points. It is still a draw and there are more applicants every year. Last years hype about an increase will cause a bubble effect in a few years. Funny zone B has just as many, if not more bear than the other zones. Just a whole lot less tags. Heck in the main area I hunt. Only 3 bear have been harvested in the last 10yrs.

    Good luck in your pursuit.

    Steve
