new to the bear hunting. Just drew my Wi tag this year and have a guy helping me do the bait. Just wondering what people are using for bait other than the day old sweets from the grocerey stores. He has been using cookie doe with success in the past just wanting more info

I have used all the sweets you can think of. Bakery leftovers’ and breads mixed in. A very light(easy to carry) and cheap one to use once they start hitting the bait is popcorn.

Gummy bears work well. If you can get Mountain Dew syrup, thats a really good top dress to your bait. You’ll need a buddy who works for Pepsi to get it. Its the stuff they use in pop fountains at fast food reatuarants.

Try to bait daily and at the same time every time. The bears will pattern your feeding schedule. Make a fair amount of noise walking in and out from the site. When it comes time to hunt, have a buddy walk in with you and set the bait. You stay there as he leaves. The bears think its safe to come feed and you’ll be ready and waiting. When I hunted 5 years ago, I had a morning bait and an evening bait. Both sites had bears on them. The morning site had bears before noon, every day. If you have multiple bears working your bait, put less bait out. It encourages competition.

Spray a little OFF! around the tree you’ll be hunting out of – then when you take the stand, you’re able to use the same stuff on your body. Aside from doing the obvious (reducing the bugs), it helps provide a bit of cover scent. I’ve also taken off my sweaty t-shirt and left it at the base of my tree. Helps condition them to accept having to smell me in order to get the goodies.
