    For those of you who just like to see bears, the baiting season has started in WI as of 4-15-09. Just have to make sure that if you do not have a harvest tag that you have your class C license.

    Some say that you will entice early boars hunting for sows during the bear rut, that just may come back and visit you in the fall. Others say that is bunk, but just so long as the bears come in for a little photo op, that is the key!!!

    Good luck if you start!!!

    Unfortunately, I think our favorite place Vinchi’s probably is done with that tradition.

    But we can start to feed Yogi under the laws that cover baiting bear in WI. Am going to try to get out there this p.m. with a camera and bait.

    1st bait set!!! Should have been two, but the one low spot sucked my front tires in and I spent an hour with the come-along and tow strap and finally got her back out. With only one camera to start the season, it is probably just fine. We’ll try to get some pics up late next week, although the suspense is killing me already!!! I put up the first one from last year just to cure the suspense. More next week!!!

    Mike:

    Almost gotta post up and then got the crash again. Still something going on in the computer. Be back a little later, suffice it to say it was quiet last week, even though I know they are up and on their feet.

    For my first time doing this this early and as patient as I have been, I was amazed to get back to the bait after an almost a ten day hiatus and find it still capped. So I brought a little liquid smoke and bombed the site to see if that would help. But I did find this little guy cruising through there during the last 10 days.

    Really wasn’t very good spring for me. As I mentioned, my one potential hunter was having a difficult time trying to decide where he is going to hunt. That doesn’t really get this guy overly motivated, so other than a lot of pine squirrels, a couple of coon, a porky or two, not a lot to get excited about.

    My friends who run the hounds said they had a sow with four cubs in their baits this spring… I wish she would send me pics of that… More later, if I get someone who wants to hunt.

    WOW! Baiting in Michigan STARTS on August 10…one month before the 1st hunt. The problem with baiting that early is;
    1) It would be extremely costly to run baits through Oct…both bait and gas $$$
    2) The daily habits of the bears can change dramatically with the onset of fall

    The positive side…you should have some very steady customers at those baits after 6 months of feeding them!
