I arrowed a 150 lb boar right at dark. Double lunger, went 40 yds. It was HOT and miserable, did I mention Windy… Didn’t think they would move in that, guess I was wrong.

September 4, 2008 at 12:51 pm #37553I shot my first bear with a bow on tuesday! I will see if i can get some pictures up of it.
I think the combo of the wind and the heat worked against me on monday. One day later and like 30 degrees cooler.
September 4, 2008 at 4:17 pm #37562The moment of truth or moments just after… Unfortunately no happy ending yet… Gave it an hour last night and looked everywhere without over disturbing the area too badly. Back out this a.m. at 6:30 and no luck again. Brother is not feeling so hot, but after work I am going to get back out there with him and see what’s up… Trail cam pics from yesterday are pretty good and will get them up later.

September 4, 2008 at 4:40 pm #37565Did he shoot it with a bow or gun? Was it the star bear? Does he have any idea where he hit it? Any blood at all? Good luck tonight. I hope you have pictures of it tomorrow.

Was shot with a 30-06 180 grain bullet. We are not sure whether it was the star bear or not. With only one shot (camera-wise), and it distorted nature, it is too tough to tell, though it looks like a nice bear. He feels pretty good that he hit it just behind the shoulder… Our location has water just to the west extending north 200 yards. He heard no bear crossing the river. The whole problem is to the east. I am sure there is more than 80 acres of tag alder… No blood, no fat, no hair…

September 4, 2008 at 6:43 pm #37579Here is a tip, if you have access to a mapping gps, that helped me find a buck my brother arrowed last year when the blood got rained out over night. Turn the map on and make a trail in a straight line in the direction the bear went. Once you get a couple hundred yards from the bait or as far as you believe the animal could have traveled, move over and work your way back staying close enough to the original trail to not miss anything. Do this until you get a couple hundred yards from the original trail. Once you get one side of the main trail covered work the other. It helps to have a couple guys along to flank you so you can cover more ground quickier. This will ensure that areas don’t get missed in a random search. Good luck.
September 5, 2008 at 6:47 pm #37624Rumor has it that GMAN arrowed a 400 lb’er. Saw one picture of it. Real nice bear. We will have to wait for him to get back for the full story.
September 6, 2008 at 2:40 pm #37645Congrats GMAN!!! Heard a dressed 440# bear made it to the local taxidermist Wed. or Thurs. up here. No other sightings from my hunter, today and tomorrow a.m. left for this early portion.

Thanks for the congrats, but this big bear down is from friends who hound hunt just west of town. I will get pics up in due time, but the bear was 568# live weight and dressed at 460#. They let a 300# bear walk the day before. More info as time permits.

I have seen alot of bears but most have been around 150-175 pounds and I am still at awe at the size of that bear. The head looked like a brown bear! Hurry up with the pics!!!!!
robhood23Posts: 214September 13, 2008 at 7:29 pm #38059They Could have at least pulled the collar off him!!j/k, Do bears this big tree Or do they fight the dogs and you go in and shoot them off the ground. Very nice bear!!
September 15, 2008 at 1:57 pm #38129That’s a dandy Mark!!!
Most bears this size don’t tree. Some will but most will stay down in swampy tag alders and walk and fight the dogs. If a couple guys get in and help the dogs by getting the bear to run some they will get tired out and will bay up and sit down with something to protect their back side. Once they get tired enough you can walk into them and shoot them on the ground.
September 17, 2008 at 10:10 pm #38350Sorry about the delete fellas, but felt a need to keep things in line on my end. Here are the pics of the largie sans companion. Still baiting for the end of the season, so more pics to come.
