Hey Bear Guy’s, I saw something while grouse hunting this weekend i’ve never seen before. Do bears scratch the bark off of trees to mark there turf? I saw a tree about 6″ diameter with the bark between 1′ and ~7’+ totally removed. I didn’t get that close for a good look. Me with 8 shot times 2 and the local attacks fresh in mind I also just got done looking at the bear tourney with ~25 bears on the list. Do they do this or not?

    Enlighten me,

    Ferny.

Yup. Bear like to scratch trees…..and telephone poles. We have had to replace two power poles serving our cabin over the years. Bear will scratch them until they are about to snap. When a bear gets those meat hooks into some good wood they simply rip it out. This seems to be a common practice where bear numbers create more interaction with each other.

If was a bear you should be able to find some hair and or claw marks on the tree. They will mark trees and power poles quite often. I have never seen one mark an entire 6′ section of tree though.
