Battery auger

Went for it and picked up a wheel house. Now I’ll have to get an auger different than the gas auger I’ve been using for almost 20 years now. Has anyone seen a certain place that’s had the best deal on an ion? I haven’t paid much attention to the battery augers other than I remember the first ions having an icing up issue. I don’t have interest in a drill type auger.

I picked up my ION a few years ago. I got the older model (standard ION w/reverse) the year they came out with the ION X. Now they have the new ION G2 this year. Looks like L&M Fleet has the older model, with reverse, for $399. I think I paid closer to $500 when I got mine. Still love it!!

No icing issues with mine either. I believe that was the very first model that came out & was a paint/coating issue.

I would say check around Joes, Thorn Bro Reeds around when the ice show usually is. They seem to have good deals then. Usually the show is early December. Congrats on the house.

If I were buying a new auger today I’d get the 40V Strikemaster.

That said I’m still happy with my ancient Ion (bought one the first year they came out 2012?)

If you’re on a budget a heavy duty 120v drill works awesome. You obviously have to have a generator going though. I used one before electric augers were really a thing.

I have the same one. It still runs great and does all the drilling I need to do.

Ion fixed the ice up problem they had for free, it was only the one year.

Thanks for the feedback sounds like the ion is the one to look into. Glad I’ll have a way to charge the battery now. Previously I held off with my gas auger still running, and not wanting to be on the ice with a dead battery.

I picked up a 20-21 Striker Ice catalog at Scheels today. Saw they’re using a 40V RAZR auger in the photos.
Does anyone know anything about them? I’ve never heard of them before.

They were out on the ice during the Perch Extravaganza last year and I played with the RAZR it seems fine, just not sure I could pull the trigger since they are almost as much. My vote would be the strikemaster 40v, that’s what I’ll be purchasing one soon.

    I begg to differ…
Their CS was great but I still have the same icing up results rendering the cutting head useless till I chip it clear. Sometimes I can’t even get through the hole till it freezes up again.

My vote would be for the Original auger bit.

If you are specifically looking for a wheelhouse option take ur pick Ion or strikemaster. Don’t think icing will be an issue with either in a house. I wouldn’t be appossedd to the drill option unless you are specifically seeking a ten inch hole. A drill may come in handy having around the house in general.

Unless you really want to jump on the electric bandwagon you do not need to get an electric auger to drill in a permanent shack. I have drilled plenty of holes in perm shacks with the old two stroke augers. Have a window in the back open and the door propped open for some cross flow and let it air out as you go around and bank the house, no big deal. If it gets too blue in there as you go from hole to hole, take a break and skim out the first holes you drilled.

I mean, take the excuse of a new house to buy a new toy if that is what you are after, I do it all the time ;). But if you are being told by other people that you need an electric now, you really don’t.

You do if you don’t want to spend the next 1/2 hour sweeping ice chips and water off your floor. Gas augers in a permanent house are a thing of the past.

People spend 20-40k on an ice house and wont spend the 500 on a electric auger are ridiculous. If you want your house to smell like 2stroke smoke then be my guest. If all your going to do is drill holes in a shack then buy the ion for 399. I prefer strike master 40v myself.

My wife would say this is the worst advice ever.

If you had a plain house with no fabric this wouldn’t be so bad. But if you have pillows, blankets, beds, couches… all fabric this would be a horrible idea to use a 2-stroke. The smell would absorb into nearly everything.

There are many available options for electric that are very cheap.

You could use some VES Gold Polaris oil, that stuff smells amazing! Who doesn’t love the smell of 2 stroke?
All joking aside, kinda, I see your point. Those fancy fish houses are more cabins on the lake and not “fish houses”. My original comment was more about the health and safety aspect and not the 2 stoke will make my house smell bad aspect. The old days of drilling in the perm with the door closed and the smoke so bad your eyes burn are over.
