It has become apparent that this is the last year for my trolling batteries. On the fence over size 31 flooded or 31 agm (24v system so 2 batteries). The flooded has an rc of 185, the agm is 200, but the AGM is 65 bucks a battery more. Can anyone explain what and if the benefits to the AGM is for a trolling motor application, if any, beyond the extra 15 minutes of reserve capacity to help justify the added cost? Do the agm’s really last longer, are better at deep discharge like some of the claims I have found searching on the web?

Brand is irrelevant as all the brands I’m looking at are private labeled east Penn batteries, more interested in the why one or the other may be better for a trolling motor battery situation, I use my terrova a lot when fishing I should add. Looked around the Web some, but what I found wasn’t really helpful in determining (or convincing) the why that I am looking for.

not in a trolling motor application but our minivan had a brand new flooded battery in it. our small children were always accidentally hitting the lights and they would stay on and the vehicle was dead in the morning. within 2 years it killed the battery from just constant draining. we bought an agm for it (optima) and while they’ve gotten better, they still drained it from time to time and the optima lasted 7 years. we just replaced it. we are probably due for a new minivan per my wife this year so i just put another flooded in it.

AGM batteries can be fully discharged more times before the batteries stop holding a charge, therefore they last a lot longer and usually have a longer warranty period as well.

I have a AGM that I run for my cranking battery which also runs my depth finders. After having it for a year now once my trolling motor batteries are gone they will be replaced with AGM.
