State fisheries officials say 80,000 anglers competed in Wisconsin fishing tournaments this year.

The Department of Natural Resources anglers won nearly $4 million in prize money at 595 tournaments. About 420 of the tournaments targeted bass. Sixty-one percent of the tournaments were catch, hold and release.

Tournament organizers can begin applying for 2012 permits on April 1.

Then add in all the tournaments that were beneath the threshold of requiring a permit. Bass Fishing = money in WI.

how many were counted more than once? in 2009, I would have been counted 8 times. Statistics can say whatever you twist them to say.

    Thanks for posting Buzz!

Even if 1 angler fished eight or even 800 times, I think the point is that tourneys are popular and where there’s tourney’s there’s money spend…and that should be good for he area.

Even if it’s the same angler going to multiple events, he/she pulls out his/her purse/wallet at each one.

I was at a meeting in Red Wing last winter. The Chamber claimed that the tourny’s they’ve held there each brought in $1 million to the local economy.

One of the ways they came up with this number was calculated by calling motels and asking how many people stayed there that were here for the event.

Wonder how that compares to MN?
