A friend of mine and I were enjoying a quiet morning of fishing. Everything was perfect, the fish were cooperating and life was good. Then a tourney boat set down right next to us and started to fish about 20 yards away. Now don’t get me wrong I fish many tounaments also and know that this is not the norm when it comes to these situations, but this is not the kind of impression that bass tournament fishermen need! I was just plain pissed and turned up my trolling motor and motored right thru the middle of the spot and parked right between them and the spot we were fishing! I didn’t say a word until the guy on the trolling motor ask how we were doing, then I said we WERE doing fine before! I think they got the message and left. If more would have been said I think my polish/german temper may have been unleashed! I wish that more enforcement of the courtesy rule would be implemented and some of these inconsiderate people (because I don’t consider them as fishermen) disqualified from the event.

How do you know they were fishing a tournament?

That sucks but its going to happen. I’ve learned that guys pull down on each other a lot. You kind of just have to cope with it and learn to play defense. If you were there first, then you are entitled to the water that you are currently fishing. However if there is a stretch 50 yards behind you that you like better that you just left, might want to get back over to it and hold on it to prevent others from fishing it. Its pretty common to find the same “spots” as another person…Everyone has to just compromise and do what they can. If I pull on a spot that I want to fish and someone else is already there, I will set up 50-100 yards back and slowly ease up on my trolling motor a little bit and just kinda hang in the area. Usually one of two things happens. Either the boat will slowly start to proceed down the bank or they will protect the spot. If they are protecting then I will leave and come back later. If they move on then I will fish it. you just have to feel each other out and give each other respect. It may have seemed like the guy was being disrespectful to you by pulling in close to you but that sounds like routine business to me. Driving over the fish and making it so nobody can fish the spot out of frustration is kind of counter productive in my opinion.

Well we all know there is always two sides to every story.
Problem with this is though bass fishermen already have a bad enough name in certain places and with certain people. The last thing we need to do is start bickering about each other.
