I made my yearly trip up to PDC for my clubs tournament over the weekend. The trip was okay for the first two days, but was a grind Sunday.

Friday my partner and I got on the water by about 5:45 or so. We headed over to my first spot that I wanted to check out and I picked up a 16″ on about my 10th cast so we headed off to check another spot. We pull up and I get a keeper largemouth and a short smallie. After the wind finally died down I wanted to check another spot that was south of the first two spots. I pulled up we had 5 blows in less than 80 yards. We never set the hook and took off.

Day one of the tournament we headed down to our spot and I right away caught fish. I got about 10 short fish before I got a keeper. I caught 2 keepers pitching a white fluke into holes in the weeds. I noticed some fish busting bait out on a flat so we went to check it out. I started getting a mix of smallies and largemouth that were short. Then I got a 15″ largemouth out of the school. After it died down I made a long cast with a poper over the flat. After 3 pops the water exploded and a giant river smallie came out and got my poper. We work her to the net and put her on the board to see. She went 19 3/4″ I ended up getting one more keeper in that spot before moving on. I found a 17.5″ largmouth to cull out one of my 14″. We ended the day in 2nd with 13 pounds. I also had big fish at 4-4 with that smallie.

Today looked like it was going to start out the same. The fish were up busting bait as soon as we pulled in. 3rd cast I had a big blow on my topwater and get it back to the boat only to see a 15.5″ whitebass. Next cast was a repeat of the last The “good” bass were in there too, but the whites were to aggresive and got to the baits first. We worked our butts off all day to get two keepers on a frog. They were still blowing up like crazy in my spot but it was almost like they were chasing the frog and not trying to eat it. My partner did loose 3 keepers including a 3 pound smallie on a buzzbait. We ended the day still in 2nd place. One more keeper would have gave us the win.

It was a good tourny for me, I had all our fish and I was fishing out of the back of the boat the whole weekend.

Congrats on the good finish ! I see you said you went down from PDC – Care to let a guy know how far south you went ? Also wondering if these fish came out of the current and the main channel ? I was there te week ebfore and catching fish on trick worms in the open holes of the weed in slack water and did catch a few nice fish in the main current in weeds on swimjigs still was struggling with catching any frog fish which I have not had a good frog bite all year on the river. 13lbs is a nice bag on that pool this year and a 4lb Smallie !!!! NICE !!!! Fishing a club tourney up there this next weekend and was just looking for a little direction !

    Thx and Congrats again !

Here is a much better picture of my smallmouth. She looks really skinny in this one though

Congrats on the good finish. I fished the Grant County 4-man and had a terrible day. Had a good week leading up to it but with the rising water and the north wind the bite went south. My flat bottom took a beating and my nerves weren’t much better. Alot of people struggled Sunday but there were a few who did real good.

Big congrats to Boods, Bucketmouth, and Dan Tessman for their first place finish. Although their secret weapon was that ringer they had for their 4th partner.
