Trying to set up a spring smallie trip with my buddy up here. Please help remind me when the best smallie action has been in the past. If possible can you narrow it down to a 2-3 week period.
    Thanks

Hey Haywood….from my personal experience I would say last week of April to the first couple weeks of May is pretty hard to beat for me….

You pretty much nailed that one although I have been known to take the biggest smallies of the year the 2nd week in april. Fewer bites but lord are they big.

For pool 4 and Lake Pepin (particularly Pepin!) the first 2 weeks of May are when even a walleye guy like me can look pretty good at catching the bass!

    Note to self

    – Schedule smallie trip with JC 2nd week of Apirl, Flick May 1st, and H2O 2nd week of May!!

I have always done best in early May right before and around Mother’s Day.

Interesting point, Moss Boss… Thought I would share a short story… For YEARS my father and I had a spring fishing trip. One he started before I was old enough to fish… something like telling my mother that he was doing HER a favor on Mother’s Day by leaving her alone… and taking one of the kids (me) fishing and away from her so she could relax…

I strongly encourage such a tradition… HOWEVER, now that I am a father and tried it… my wife sees through this disguise… dang it!

Bottom line… MOTHER’S DAY weekend is HOT… especially for largemouth… especially Pool 9… I just wish I could be out there then… Maybe when my boy gets older and my wife gets, well, less “all knowing.”

I usually take my mom out and catch some smallies with her on leeches and slip bobber rigs on Mother’s Day. We have caught some very nice ones in the past. This year the action was hot but we didn’t get any pigs. If I can find a pic at home I’ll try and scan it and post it!!

The mother’s day secret is to take the mother fishing!!

Your right Jeremy..Middle of April is best for the pigs…But I never get sick of catchin those 3lbers+ in the begining of May….James they must be really stacked on Lake Pepin if a walleye addict like you can catch them…

MOSSBOSS that sounds like a plan. The Pool 4 & 5 guys seemed to have an incredible Smallie bite early last year. Our usual May 15thish BIG Smallie run down here,(pool 8&9), didn’t seem to happen last year. While we were getting 3-3.5#s smallies James and Flick were reporting 4-5#ers. Hope our run comes back to us this Spring. Largemouth were so strong in 4.5 to 5#s in early May that it almost seemed like they overpowered the Smallies. I wonder if anybody else had a good early May For Smallies down this way last year. I was so hard on the LM I might have fished right past it.
