The past few days on the river have been enjoyable to say the least. Since Thursday I have been on the water every day and have covered much of pool 8 including parts of 7 and 9. I had the pleasure of getting out with John Stears on pool 9 yesterday and that was a great experience. We found a couple takers on a flipping bite near wood, but for the most part the bite was very tough. A few frog fish showed themselves but would hardly commit to the bait. With a tough bite on 9 we headed for “home” and looked for some more agressive frog fish on pool 8. We only fished 8 for a couple hours but managed to boat somewhere between 10-12 keepers in that time, most coming on a frog. I used a frog to get the fish out of the slop while John alternated between his frog and a swim jig to clean out a lot of good fish. All in all it was a great day. No real monsters were caught, but we did have a couple around 3 and a nice double on a couple fish over 2-1/2 lbs as you see John holding below. Thanks for coming down John it was a great time! and your Tournament Strength tuna is pretty good! (coming from someone who has always been pretty much afraid of tuna )

Today was a different day on the water and I wanted to try some new water so off to pool 7 it was. it took me a long time to find the first fish of the day but once I did I was very happy. I found an offshore windblown vegetation point and flipped a chigger craw with a half ounce weight. Several fish came out of one spot including one over 3 lbs. The wind was getting a little annoying at this point and I was getting hungry so I came off the water early with a limit of around 11 lbs. after lunch I went back out on 8 for an hour and popped one more fish over 3 lbs. All in all it has been a good week of fishing for me since school got out. I have found some slop fish, flipping fish, and swim jig fish, my bread and butter! Below you will find some pictures starting last week with my best 2 from a club tournament I won with 12 lbs and then a 20″ smallmouth from Friday, Justin with a 2-1/2+ from Saturday, and the rest are from yesterday’s outting with John.

    Hey Cade,
    Nice post.
I have had the opportunity to fish with John as well. He is a class act and packed full of knowledge which he is willing to share.
However, I have seen but have not dared to try the tournament strength tuna!
Glad to see that there is a student out there who can figure out what to do with his spare time without needing mom or dad to coordinate, schedule and supervise every second of your day, this is becoming a very rare thing.
Keep up the great work and continue to enjoy your summer!

I learned a lot for John. He showed me a lot and I have a new angle on flipping for sure! I also liked his new St. Croix mojo swim bait rod that he is using for froggin’. That thing was a beast! Super leverage for awesome casting distance and incredible hooking power from long-range. I have to say, those rods are probably the best rod for the money on the market right now!
