How many of the Bass fishermen here still throw the Rapala Original Floating lure?

I went back to them last year with some good success, especially late summer into the fall.

Never heard of them! lol. They are a go to bait for me. I love to use them in summer. I use them in shadows and in clear water. I got some monster smallies with the gold number 11.

I like the smaller ones on light tackle. The bigger one’s just don’t cast as nice as a husky jerk.

not too long ago, 1979, I caught the big bass in the LaCrosse Bassmasters for the year, on a number 9 perch color on the Onalaska spill way..

I was just thinking about fishing them this morning.. I use them as a top water bait.. where I just twitch them on the surface.. gold and silver are much easier to see. but that perch color has been a good one for me since Jim Stahl from Mac’s bait, sold it to me in 79…

I use Rapala’s in a totally different way then a Rouge.. I use Rouge’s as a true JERK BAIT.. Rapala’s I use on a top water or just on a simple straight retrieve..

one interesting story, was one time right in the bay on the Chippeawa Flowage, in front of Herman’s landing.. we caught a bunch of walleyes as dusk,, just on that straight retrieve.. no twitch.. no nothing.. but those fish WOULD NOT eat a ROUGE.. they wanted NO rattle.

so at times these are NOT an interchangable lure..

Yep, those smallies will hit ’em hard. I like to fish the fluke type of plastics and when they get going on those and won’t hang on to it the original rapala is the ticket. Just watch out for the hooks!

    Oh Yeah!!
Oldster TIP #1…take a silver/black back #11 floating Rap and position the knot low on the nose…add a dab of fish glue and let dry a minute… Now cast it out, let it sit as long as you can, then twitch it with 3-4 quick agressive jerks and pause again…LOOK OUT!!!!
Awesome topwater twitch bait! I bend down the barbs for bass.

the last year and a half, I’ve had terrific success with the x-raps for Big Smallies.
    Sure is fun.

I love them, just one thing though:
Ever noticed that when you start talking about a bait it gets discontinued

Or redesigned. I still have a good stock of the Balsa Models. (With the wrap over lay.) Every once in a while I find all but new one at garage sales.

The only time I throw one is when I am Rapala tournament Fishing on the Wii. They work great pulling them off the drop near where they are building that house on the far shore (that is if you can take the non stop hammering).
