I recently found a new lake in Tallahassee fl. I’m used to fishin pretty clear water for bass and this lake is almost black. It looks like its got a lot of potential for bass, i just can’t catch anything. I’ve tried the Original Rapala, Number of top waters/poppers, worms( Dark red, Light green) and many more. What do you guys suggest for this time of year and for water as black as coffee? Thanks in advance!

I go with black or brown as a standard in dirty water. From there I switch completely to Chart or White.

is this a cypress stained lake? If so i always used a black worm.If it’s a color like the St Johns i would either use a black or any dark color. I did catch alot on red in cypress stain so it’s really kinda hard to say.If in doubt toss the kitchen sink an everything else you have with ya

    The thought here is…

If yuo have dark water, the fish need contrast to THEIR world. So, if the water is dirty or dark, the fish will see a HARD contrast to a DARK color against the sky… AND, the size should be slightly BIGGER than normal.

When clear water is around, smaller lures and lighter colors work best, especially in GIN clear lakes like found in Northern WI, MN and Canada.

Or so I have read. For me, I have yet to get to the FL lakes, but hope to someday. Here in the north country, we have dark water in places, too. Those stained by tanic acid… there I have luch with Black, Brown, Red, dark-purple, and Blue. But, as JC pointed out, if logic fails you, for some reason white, yellow or chartreuse seem to work…

One thing is for sure, make some noise… BLADES help, especially Colorado blades. Even fish a spinnerbait slowly in a lift-drop retrieve presentation.

Try even rattles or beads and clickers with the plastics… something to get te bass’ attention.

    Hope this helps!
