Like a lot of people here, I’ve been reading reports for the past few years from Steve DeZurik about the great smallie fishing on the upper Mississippi. So I decided to give it a try this year with my former pheasant hunting buddy from Iowa. I say “former” because he’s since went to the dark side (took up bow hunting deer) and no longer hunts pheasant but a few times a year. I borrowed a friend’s 12 foot jon boat and threw it in the back of the mini van along with a couple of batteries and a transom trolling motor.

The advice was to put in at Clearwater and float down to Monticello. But I thought instead taking two vehicles, we’d just put in at Monticello and go as far upstream as we could on one battery and then float down on the second battery. BAD IDEA.

We put in at Terrace Park campground and received some advice to fish the rocks just downstream of the park. Things were going fine until we reach the shallow, faster water about a quater mile down stream. Wow, I had no idea the water was that fast. I just paddled to avoid boulders as we were sweep downstream. The water was too shallow to even try to use the trolling motor. We had to get back upstream somehow so I jumped in and just pulled the boat back upstream. When we returned to the deeper, slower water, the trolling motor worked just fine. We managed to catch some small fish on spinners. We tried going upstream but soon reached another shallow, fast section. I pulled the boat a long ways and still couldn’t see the end of the shallows and there was some lightning moving in so we just head back to the ramp as it started to rain.

I was told the water is very low. I can’t imagine how fast the water must be roaring when it’s up a couple of feet.

I’m looking forward to another trip but it’ll definitely be a one way, downstream adventure.

Been there done that about 3/4 of a mile South of Elk River. Two vehicles is the best mode of action. Of course a river pro would be my #1 option.

    Mack,

I did talk to a nice guy in a RiverPro at the campground ramp as we were leaving. I believe his name was Pete Milner but I’m not positive on that. It appeared that he had a couple of guide clients.

I was wondering how a jet would even run through some of those shallows. I remember Steve use to run his big Ranger up there so obviously some sections must be much deeper. I was surprised at how many mussels were in amongst the rocks in that fast, shallow water.

    Thanks for the link.

Did your partner yell, YHA MULE, YHA!!

Living on this stretch of river, I really need to start taking advantage of those huge smallies right out my back door.

    Boone,

Glad you made the trip up there…..but tough day on the water it seems. The smallies are on a absolute terror right now where I have been fishing, so do not give up quite yet!

    Tuck,

You’re right about the bass in small ponds. That little 12 ft. jon is an excellent boat for ponds that don’t have ramps.

    Steve,

I’m not at all discouraged. I learned a lot on that first trip. It seems like I spent over half my time struggling with boat handling issues and pulling the boat up through the shallows. Next time I’m going to just float down stream and use the trolling motor to move into likely looking spots and anchor. If I can’t find somebody to go with me, I’m thinking about dropping a bike off downstream and riding it back to the van.

How long do you think the bite will last? At what water temperature does the bite slow down? It looks like we have another few days of warm weather.

    Thanks,

    Boone

The bite will last into Jan/Feb if you are brave enough to tough it out. Won’t be dragging the boat then though.

    John,

I remember reading an article by Steve Carney in “Minnesota Outdoor News” last winter in which he talked about smallie fishing by the power plant during the winter. Sounded like he caught a lot of fish on big minnows if I recall correctly…. and he was wading. Probably was wearing more than jeans and tennis shoes I’d guess.
