Well the weekend was bitter cold. I swear ever year I tell myself I am going to buy that guide wear from Cabelas but never do…. So I say once and for all .. “this year I am going to buy some guide wear from Cabelas” –grin-
Anyway, Saturday the bite was tremendous. We caught more bass than anyone should be allowed with many in the 2-3 lb range. We didn’t stumble into any real sows but I think the smaller fish we keeping us happy. I’ll take a hundred 2.5 lb bass anyday.
Sunday proved to be odd, The bite was strong and the bass were really hitting our baits hard until around noon. At which time the bite turned to mush. We were still getting hit but had to feed the baits to them. The bigger fish must have had there fill since I was struggling to get any fish over 3lbs. Plenty 1.5 fish today but no big’ens.
I spent much of the day with a Carolina rig in hand followed by a pitching a tube to submerged cover. This is the time of the year those hidden wood piles become little piles of gold. I suspect I might not make it back to the river unless lady luck brings me some 60 degree days. This 40 degree high days are for the birds right now. I am sure I will sing a different tune in a couple weeks but for now, that’s my story and we all know I am not sticking to it. –grin-
Hope you all get out soon. The bass are making the short days even shorter.

I know a place where you can get rid of your Vikings tickets to a guy who watches them WIN when he goes!!!!!

And, you have my number already, so give me a call and tell me when to pick up the tickets!!

I have to agree with JC about the sunken wood. We switched back and forth for largies to smallies all weekend. When we were in largie water you could predict when you were going to get bit. Any old piece of wood that was completely submerged had fish on it. The new stuff that was partially out of the water occasionally had a fish but the old stuff was a guarantee. Did the most damage slow rolling a spinnerbait.

Believe me, I’m a vikings fan and would have prefered to watch them lose rather than freeze my tail off pulling 12″ fish most of the weekend. Man was it cold. (And yes, before anyone says it, My wife fishes too )

    Jeremy,

I am glad to hear that little duck hunter adventure hasn’t

kept you off the water. As for Cabela’s Guidewear,

I have their heavy duty waterfowl stuff, and it is just

barely good enough at this time of year. While you are

at it, ordering from Cabela’s that is, get some expedition

weight MTP underwear to put under the Guidewear. That

should help keep those foolish enough to be standing

on the front deck of a bass boat at this time of year,

    WARM!

As for Tom’s foolish waste of the day, I am so Green

Bay Packers, that when you cut me I bleed green and

gold. And I would never go to a football game over

a day afield. My brother has season tickets, but since

he is a crazed deer hunter, he gives them to family,

so he can sit, freezing in a tree stand. Being

of the duck crazed variety, I sit freezing in a duck

boat. You once again prove that you are of the river

bass crazed variety(grin). I will soon morph back

into my more sane fishing alter ego, but for

now, I retire to my cold wet duck boat.

I went hunting yesterday, and my wife was fretting

about me being alone. She said, “What if you fall in?”.

I replied, “I have a big boat, and even if I did

fall in, I have done that before and survived ice

choked waters”(Thanks USAF Arctic Survival School).

She then said, “What if you have a heart attack?”.

My reply was, “You will have one hell of a time getting

that smile off my face, for my funeral”.

    Too Funny…
so that guide wear is not blizzard proof huh.
I will get the long johns on order as well. I hope to make it out a couple more times. I am busy the next couple weekends so I suspect I will really need some warm clothes the next time I go. Good luck with those blue bills. Gotta love Diver Ducks!

I have the Cabela’s Guide Wear series rain-gear… AND, the HOT TOMALES underwear… layer that with the Pantagonia fleece and you are good to near zero temps… its the HANDS that I have a problem with… can’t FEEEEEEEL anything… blasted winter, ruins my attitude!

5 months ’til spring fishing! Time to hibernate and recover my marriage… get my “points” up with the wife!

I got the Omni Tech waterfowl series from Columbia . With the bibs the stuff is warm and dry. One thing bad is the stuff is pretty spendy.

. . . . . staying warm while the other guys freeze: PRICELESS !!! I don’t care if it’s spendy as long as I stay warm. But I do have to agree that the Cabelas stuff isn’t blizzard proof. Guess that’s why I still have my old snow mobile suit.
