This past weekend I spent 3 days in Northeastern Wisconsin fishing a couple different lakes for both Largemouth and Smallmouth. The Largemouth were not very cooperative, but the smallies more than made up for them. Between my girlfriend and I, we probably caught close to 100 bass during the long three day weekend. We had a great time doing some sight fishing and perfecting our drop shot techniques. We also caught a lot of cruising fish with jerkbaits.
On Saturday, we fished a small lake and caught most of our fish with a drop shot or wacky worm. The smallies were on the beds pretty good, and you could pick a fish off of just about every bed. The fish were not as big as I would have liked, but we did catch a bunch of 15-17 inch fish plus a couple of 18 inchers. We did manage some bonus largemouth as well, but only one was of decent size.
On Sunday we chose a different lake, and all of our bigger fish came on jerkbaits. The three biggest fish hit the tape at 19.75, 20.25, and 20.5 inches long. All of these fish were easily over 5 pounds. We also caught numerous 3-4 pound fish on the jerkbait as well. After throwing a jerkbait for 6 hours my arm was wore out. In 6 hours of fishing, we caught about 50 keepers with the bulk of the fish being in the 16-18 inch range. All of these fish were prespawn males and females. Every fish we caught looked like it swallowed a football.
On Monday we headed back to the same lake as Sunday, but what a difference a day makes. The fish were not roaming as much, and would not want to chase anything, so again we had to go back to the drop shot. All of our fish were smaller today than yesterday, but it still make for a fun weekend.
Tight lines,
Ben
