Duck Hunters…..

    OK fellas,
I know that the season for shooting ducks is short but what happened this AM in my own back yard was appalling. I was on the water getting in a couple hours of “Me” time and was witness to some over zealous hunters. It seems they had some ducks in there decoys when I went around the corner. What happened next was an absolute BB storm with steel ricocheting off my boat, my person, and feathers everywhere. Out of the 20ish ducks amongst there spread I would guess only a couple were shot in the air. The rest were raked off the water. After the shooting ended they ended up with an estimated dozen ducks, one fisherman, and a Triton bass boat. What a frick’en nightmare. Needless to say I am typing this and its only 7:30 in the am. I am glad to announce that the Triton sustained no immediate damage however the fisherman has a couple of welts on the back of his neck. We Iowegians need some serious help!!! I am hoping they open the season up on these duck hunters as I have a ¾ ounce rattle trap with there names written all over it.

This happened out at Palo? I guess I didn’t know you could decoy on the lake.

Words of wisdom from an experienced duck hunter to me (back in my waterfowling days):

These guys we’re with spent half their lives carving and hand-painting their decoys, so no matter what happens don’t Arkansas the ducks.

You were very lucky JC. Could have been in the face instead of back of the neck. Hope nothing really serious. Was always taught to look before you shoot. That was ALWAYS!!
Hope they had the inflatable decoys and put a few air holes in them.

    hey JC,

We had a similar thing like that a few weekends ago, where we had some other hunters that moved in right next to us and they had 2 boats, 5 hunters. the where shooting at anything that was flying (duck wise. but we had ducks landing in the boat, bb’s raining down on us, and them yelling at us when we shot at the feather creatures. now it is turned into a race between me and my wifes cousin and these idiots to get out on the lake. I am sure that some people don’t really think before they pull the trigger. I am like many other hunters. show respect for those other people that are out there using the water/land for other recreation, and look before shooting. maybe they needed glasses. good to see that every came out ok though.

I had an incident last week at a lake I was hunting. My buddy and I got there plenty early and we were the first on the lake. We got to our spot and settled in for a rest. About 1 hour before shooting these two boats showed up and were very unhappy to see us. It turned out they hunted the spot the day before. They had the gall to tell us to leave their spot. After a few minutes of arguing they set up about forty yards on either side of us. At first light they both started blasting away. I have never seen such dumb@ss skybusting. We were getting rained on by BBs from both sides. These inconsiderate fools were sharing the same dogs and they sent their dog to each other right through our decoy spread. One guy actually walked through our spread to go over and talk to his buudies in the other boat. Finally I had had enough so I went over to the other boat to have a talk with these people. They told me that their problem with us was that we were from Wisconsin and had no right being in their lake. I’ve only lived in Wisconsin for one year. This was a lake I grew up hunting. They even went so far as to leave a disparaging note on my buddy’s windshield at the launch. I was completely shocked by the inconsiderate behavior and attitude of these people. I had never met or seen these folks in my life and nobody deserves that treatment.

Thank goodness this is the exeption rather than the rule about how hunters act toward other hunters. I could tell a hundred stories depicting the kindness and respect shown by my fellow hunters.

Too bad they can’t find a way to keep the idiots and a–holes off the water and out of the woods.
But then I’d probably be banned for life.
Seriously, the dnr and county sheriff should be notified when things like this happen.
    Glad you’re ok jc.

    Jeremy,

I would have been on the cell as soon as my boat pistol
was down to the last mag(grin). Seriously, this needs
to be called in, and Law Enforcement needs to be involved
immediately. A few years back, I had a commercial
fisherman spend almost 2 hours setting a trot line
about 100 yards off my decoys. I should have sprinkled
him(grin), but I calmly sat up in the blind, drank some
coffee, and had a sandwich while he went about his
business. I passed on several ducks, that would have had
my shot raining down on him.

I am glad to hear that you survived, with no injuries.
This is one reason why I turn my pitching stick in
for my Browning Auto 10 ga, each fall. At least I can
shoot back(grin). A 3/4 oz Rattletrap will just make
them reload faster! When my 10 ga. barks, they will
be diving for the bottom of their boat. I have a single
shot 10 ga. goose gun that you can borrow, and it will
only take up one slot in the rod locker(grin). You can
tell LE that it is your tournament starting gun(grin).
For all that do not know me, I an NOT serious about
shooting back. Well it may have happened once in
a crowded SE Wisconsin marsh when I was treated like
Jeremy, and they full well knew what they were shooting
    at.

Jeremy… Sorry to hear that happened.

BUT, BBBane… THAT was enjoyable reading!

If I see you during gun season, I will certainly take notice…

    Chris

Did you think I was really superman? If so then you are correct. If only I could find a phone booth.
Seriously though we used to be neighbors. I was the loud neighbor. I sent you a PM.

man that sounds like a good idea, break out the artillery and start shooting back!!!! at the ducks and geese that is. I should bring all my shotguns out with me into the boat, I could make is sound like a war. j/k the main thing is that jc survived, the boat didn’t get damaged, and well it is a learning experience for everyone. I never thought about hunting an actual lake where they are still fishing. I do hunt the mucky swamps, don’t have to worry about the 3/4 oz rap

I realize you were fishing ,but that is the main reason that I quit that “sport”. Having to get up at 4:00 in the morning just to have someone set up within yards is clear stupidity. I used to hear alot of swear words and cussing between boats when I went so I gave up! Glad you were’nt hurt. Catch any fish? I would have raised holy hell with a few curses and swear words if I were you!Need any?????
