As of right now I can say that I’m catching fish in 2 stages. I’m catching some on beds, and some in “post spawn” water with current. It is my belief that the majority of the fish have spawned out already, but i can’t be sure of that. I fished for a few hours with Justin after school today and did alright. The numbers were really there but the size you needed to work for. I ended up with 14 lbs for my best 5 with a 19-1/2″ spawned out largie and a couple more in the 2-3/4 to 3-1/4 lb range. We did find fish stacked in a few areas, but most of the time when we ran into those, they were small fish. The nicer sized fish were coming sporadically on current breaks. The 19-1/2″ absolutely crushed my swim jig. Almost to the point of being hard to believe it wasn’t a northern
To make the night even more incredible, I was fishing a point with heavy current on it and 4′ of water around 9:15 and it was getting awfully dark. I stuck a 2-3/4 lb fish on a jig, and decided id better throw a Crankbait to see if there are more fish around. A few casts and the fight was on. I saw it at the boat and it was long and looked like another northern. Upon further examination I about pooped my pants when I found out it was a walleye! after a bunch of fumbling around i managed to get it in the boat and it taped at 27 inches. Wow. i threw back in there and ended up getting a 23″er on top of that. I still can’t believe it! The sad thing is, a 27″ walleye fights about like a 16″ bass…
We did our best to get a pic but as you can see it is really bad. You can see down to about its butt and that’s all you get.
