Have you got a fishing buddy that always along for the worst bite? Meet Jeff “Cold Front” Renardy, aka Haywood. I was ready to let him off the hook last fall, but the two times we fished this spring have sucked. Let me tell you about Fridays fishing trip and see if you agree. My plan to fish with one of the IDO staff fell through so I was planning on fishing Alma alone. I went out to hookup the boat and discovered a flat tire on the suburban. As I’m scrambling to find someone to fix the flat my cell rings. I should have known…it was “the Cold Front”. Against my better judgment, I asked him if he wanted to come along. We started fishing for some perch for dinner. The last trip they were eating plastics. Friday they wouldn’t touch em, but who’s in the boat? We swing out deeper and make a vertical drift, Jeff’s line is out of the water, on my first drop I get a 16” walleye. Jeff drops his line and we go 300 yards before the next bite…coincidence? I don’t think so!
The vertical bite dies so we start dragging ringworms in near rock we get seven bites and land two, normally it’s 90%…but who’s in the boat?
That dies so we move downstream to a series of wing dams for walleye and smallies. Jeff lucks into one on the 2nd stop, on the 3rd stop I break of 2 smallies on 6 lb line…Jeff had nothing to do with it but I can blame him.
We end up with 3 walleye, 3 sauger, and six smallies for 4 ½ hours of work.
I dropped Jeff off at 4:30…run back to the dam we got one fish off and on my first cast a 16” smallie drill my ringworm…Jeff’s heading home and the bite turns on… coincidence? I don’t think so!
Have you got a “cold Frond” among your fishing buddies?
