Guys,
Well I’m off to Georgian Bay (the north end of Lake Huron) as a member of the MN BASS Federation for the BASS northern Divisional tomorrow. Should be quite an experience but the drive will be a drag. Looks like it will be 15-16 hours, it’s almost to Toronto.
My wish list is to be the top guy on the MN team and qualify for the nationals; draw Champman, who will be there as a member of the WI team; and have the MN team finish in top three in the team competition. There is a big difference in the pay back and even with the perdiem from the Federation it won’t come close to covering expenses. The hope to do is brake even on the money. Finishing high, as a team at this level of competition is something to be proud of. You’re fishing the top 12 finisher from last Years State tournaments from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Ontario and possibly Italy.
We will have a week to prepare with the tournament that starts on September 24th and ends on the 26th. The area is huge but offers excellent brown and green bass fishing. I opted not to be a boater because my boat is starting to show her age and is a little small. I have had her on Erie; St. Clair and Green Bay but the bigger boats sure are a better ride. The point is as a non-boater, the practice strategy will be different. In the BASS draw format I’m guaranteed half the fishing day on my water. However, the travel time between spots is part of the equation. What we (actually my traveling partner and I) will have to determine is should we try to find spots in all the major areas or find spots near the tournament headquarters. In water that big in may be counter productive to jump from major area-to-major area. It just takes to much travel time. We hope the first couple of day will give us an indication of what to do. I’ll do report when we get back.
