Pool 10

    Fished Pool 10 Monday with pretty good success. Most fish came off topwater baits and finding weeds with current running either through them or next to them seemed to be the key. Most fish were caught on Bass Rats and tournament frogs. Spent some time fishing wood with current with hardly any success. It seems the wood bite has been almost non-existant for me almost all summer.

    Agree on the wood bite for the most part. Spotty success, mostly coming on very high and blue sky mornings. Though I couldn’t explain why… Beyond that… wood has been less than spectacular. I fully expect it to pick up in late September as fish move out of the decaying vegitation, though. Don’t give up.

    By the way, this is refering to Pool 7… so there is some consistancy between pools…

    I fished pool 10 as well early a.m. Monday. Concentrated on the wing dams and main channel points. Had no success on top water which really suprised me. All our fish came off shallow running crankbaits. Pulling in all largemouth was also a bit of a surprise. Tried some back water in Japan slough with little success. Bait fish everywhere. You guys mentioned finding fish on weeds with current. Since that seems to be hard to find with this low water, i’m courious, how deep was the water near the weeds? Was it boarding deep water or on a shallow flat. ? Just couruious because I abandoned that concept and stuck to the main channel. Just wondering if I made the wrong choice.

    Both.

    Okay, what do I mean… flow is king. If you can find “funnels” of water, the depth doesn’t matter. Most of the bigger fish came where depths >4 ft existed, but some were <3 ft… key is FLOW. Fish in, on, around the flow…

    That seems to be king for me… you are right, that there is little current. Although slight, you can find areas where teh flow velocity is increased (over wingdams, funnel areas, etc) that concentrate the fish.

    Good fishing!

    Fished 10 on Sat. with a couple of friends. I tried the main channel north of Lansing in the morning. I’ve never fished above Lansing before so I spent allot of time looking. We caught fish off the rocks at mile 669 using Kalins,shad raps and double willow spinnerbaits. The kalins picked up a few sauger also. We did run up Desoto Bay and caught a few big gills with a jig/nightcrawler. The last part of the day was spent down from the power plant. There wasn’t any current where I usually fish but managed a few smallies. Found some current in a backwater spot and ended up having some fun with small rattle traps. See ya next time.

    Crees, it seemed that as long as there was current in the weeds fish would be present too. Deeper water nearby didn’t really seem to matter. Alot of the fish we caught came out of water no deeper than a couple of feet. I don’t think we boated any LM over 3 pounds though. I’m having a heck of a time trying to find a big fish pattern.

    Birdman, Thanks. I’m sharing your frustration with not finding any big fish. If there was such a thing as being on the “Little fish Pattern”, i’m certainly on it. Iv’e tried to target larger fish during the later part of the summer without much luck. I’ve switched to larger baits, smaller baits, deeper water, shallow water & changed presentations. It’s becoming frustrating.

    I probably caught 30 bass in a row off a sand bar pt with hard current, the first three went over 3Lbs today in the harpers area pool 10 mostly on buzz baits. The wood backwater bite was also ok but mostly with the drop shot method and a 8 inch worm. {John}
