Hey the KFAN tournament is here! The tourney will be held Saturday and Sunday on pool 3,4. Supposed to be over 100 boats. Bound to be some great anglers. Bound to be some great fish caught. Come check out the weigh in at Treasure Island Casino. Or better yet pay your money and play the game. It’s a benifit tournament held for a great cause, but mostly it just gives all of us bass guys a reason to go fish. Good luck to all participants ( just not too much luck…or should I say…a little less than me).

Good luck, Jim. I’d predict fishing to be pretty good on Pool 4. Fish a perfect tournament, have a 2.5 pound average, and I’d guess you’ll be right near the top.

Since no one has posted yet I will. jesdall and his partner WON! 40lbs. 57 boats total. mnfish(that’s me) and my partner came in 2nd. 39lbs. Was some tough conditions for most but not us. We actually had good calm water to fish. Only caught fish on one of the 10 places we caught fish during practice. Only weighed in 4 smallies. The rest were large mouths. Made the difference. Largemouths were fat! Lots of shad and crayfish in the livewell afterwards. Jim congrats! Thought that purple boat would have scared them away.

You have no idea how much it hurt to see that Allison pulling away from me when I started back towards the lake. 100 lbs of cold weather gear, 30 gallons of water in the livewell, 18.5 lbs of fish, and 200 lbs of tackle will slow any boat down. We shall meet again…

Thanks for the congrats guys. Congratulations to MN fish as well. You sure put the pressure on me and Jay.

Saturday was the easy day for us. First spot 40 minutes we had 21.03 lbs in the boat. We layed off our fish the rest of the day, and went looking for more new spots for Sunday that might have held some good fish.

Sunday the bite was completely different. Our first spot had 2 boats on it when we got there ( I don’t know the wisconsin channel so took the no wake zones ) We went to our spots that we had fish going but had not fished on Saturday. The bite was very poor. At 11:30 we only had 2 fish in the boat 1 good one and one small fish. We switched to cranking and pulled into a spot that had only produced one small keeper in practice, and got 4 in 15 minutes (let the pressure off a little bit). We continued cranking and caught our last fish with 1:40 left in the tourney.

Topwater said it all in his earlier post “Fish a perfect tourney and get a 2.5 lb average and you’ll be near the top.” That is exactly what happened. We never lost a fish. Sunday we only had 15 fish for 9 keepers. We never missed a bite. it is exactly what had to happen to win with great competition from MNFISH and the rest of the guys. Special thanks to “TOPWATER”. I fished a club tourney, and the 4 man classic with him within the last couple of weeks. He was throwing a crankbait that I had never thrown before, and did very well on it. I bought a few of them from bass pro. We were fixing to loose Sunday, when I switched to that crankbait and produced (3) 3+ lb’rs off 1 spot. ( I was paying attention Brian )

We finished with 40.56 lbs just .8 lbs ahead of MNfish. I’de like to note that every angler that got a check took at least $100 out of the prize envelope and gave it back to St Jude for the childrens hospital. Over $20,000 was raised to help kids with cancer. What a great cause, and a great bunch of anglers for a competition. Can’t wait till April to do it again.

    MNfish, care for a re-match?

Don’t sweat it, Jim. Had I stayed into it on into the lake I’d have slowed considerably. I knew when I first saw you earlier that you weren’t set to run, but we don’t run into each other that often. Seriously, though….Congratulations to you and your partner. That’s a fine weekend of fishing, in anyone’s book.

I also fished the tournament. What was most inpressive to me was the consistency Jim produced. I think 22 pounds the first day and 18 the next. Quite a few teams produced good weights the first day and then did rather poorly the next day.

I have a question about the way most people fish their spots. We did not go down through Pepin so I don’t know about how those guys fished. Maybe it didn’t matter because the drop-off wasn’t so severe. But it seemed that most boats were standing off shore quite a bit, casting just ahead of the boat and retrieving back to the boat. With the shoreline dropping off so fast along the riprap it just didn’t seem that the lure would be staying in the strike zone very long. Of course getting in along the shore and casting more parallel with the shore the way we did didn’t put many fish in our boat either. (We might have done a little better had we fished more spots.) My partner speculated that most boats were standing off because they didn’t want to bump their boats. Can anyone think of other reasons?

    Urbanrivers,

I can not speak for the people fishing the tournement or the reasoning behind it as I was not fishing. This time of year a lot of times the more active bass will suspend off of the steeper breaks chasing schools of baitfish for a quick meal, as opposed to being right up on the rocks.

This is what I have learned from my past expeiriences. Hopefully some one who fished the tourney can give us their insight and reasoning for doing so.

    See ya on the river!

If you get your boat over the top of a school of active smallies, they are no longer active. This is the primary reason. Dustin is also correct in that fish are often out chasin shad off the breaks. Another very good reason not to get too close.

Do you think they are more schooled up this time of the year? Up in pools 1 and 2 I have thought they have been spread out more, except for those I find right under the Dam.

Thanks for the hint… You are such a tease!!! -grin-

My guess is the Original Rat’l Trap in Brownish Red Crawfish or Chart Crawfish if it was sunny.
