just started fishing for bass. I was always after eyes for the most part. But with the river traffick the way it is on 8, decided i would try the backwaters for bass. Beside I like to catch fish, don’t really care what species. So a thank you to blue and Slop, who helped me out in a few pm’s. So far, it has been mostly top water for me, with tossing to a few high banks. Have fished on a few evenings in the last couple of weeks. Have been doing ok I think, I have been pleased. Last monday, went o goose and fished for 3 hrs with 3 follows. Was getting a bit discouraged and thought maybe i should just go home, then I caught a fish-14incher. Then another in a very similar looking area. Started to find the grass and weeds in other locations, and low and behold, fish. Well i don’t know how many fish and blow-ups I had, but it lasted for over an hour. All fish would have been keepers. Some actually came out of the water after hitting the bait, i thought that was ok. I only had one bait to throw for top water , but now I have a cuople different types to try, was thowing a horny toad. Gonna give flukes a try, since Slop said I should. Anyway , any other ideas from anyone is appreciated. good luck fishing–John

throw some buzz baits!!!!!! like booyah or strike king. looks kind of like a spinner bait, but with one big blade in front of a jig. makes lots of noise and flash and drives big bass crazy!!!!! works best early morning and at sun down. will also catch musky and pike. have fun! ps., you fish buzz baits on top of the water, and you want them to make alot of splashing action.

you can also throw some big bass jigs with nice plastic trailers (berkley power worms/zoom worms/lizzards/frogs/crawdads) pull and jerk on the bottom or over structure. just make sure you count to 3 before setting the hook or you will rip the bait right out of her mouth.

I always thought that ‘bump’ I feel when they take the jig/worm/senko is the bait hitting the back of their mouth…so I’ve set the hook immediately…with great success…

If they’re not taking it ‘fully’ and more tentative, that’s when I really like to use crayfish scents…used to love the old ‘Riverside RealCraw’…now, since I can no longer get it…have moved to smelly jelly product…

another topwater not to ignore: Heddon baby torpedoes…and 1/4 oz Rebel PopR’s…

So many lures, so many bass…so little time…not enough money…
