Yesterday was our 4th tournament of the year and we had our biggest show as well. We had 6 boats for this tournament which made me really happy. The bad part was right when we blasted off it started raining hard and lightning.
We had a near disaster during the morning yesterday. When our #5 boat blasted off and passed everyone but boat #1, he had an accident. Right after passing another tournament boat he hit a 30′ long tree that was floating down the river . He said he was running wide open at a speed of about 70mph. The guys that saw it happen said that when the motor hit the tree the nose stuck into the water and the boat did a 360 . The driver was haning 3/4 of the way out of the boat and his partner was laying in the drivers sea t. I hope that it goes as a wake up call to everyone that saw it or hears about it. Just because your boat can go 60+ mph does not mean you always should . It was raining hard enough that they did not see the tree until they were 15′ from it. From what we could tell after the tournament, he may have cracked the back of the boat. This is a year old Champion that spent most of last year in the shop with factory transum problems. We are all happy that it was just the boat and not one of them that was hurt.
With my slow 30 mph boat we rain right into the storm and decided not to test our luck and run throught it. So we tied up under a bridge and waited the storm out. About and hour later we were able to head to our first spot. We get there only to find they guys that had the accident sitting there. I went up to make sure they were okay and then I let the wind blow us away from them. After about 10 cast with a spinnerbait I landed a keeper that came off an eel grass clump. We worked that area and never got another bite, so we continued to let the wind blow us up the bank. That did not produce anything, then I noticed a island point that looked really good. We pulled over to it and I picked up another keeper on my 3rd cast with a frog. My partner got another keeper on his next cast with a frog as well. But we really hit that area hard for the next 40 min and never got bit. We fished until 12:30 in that area and then moved back up river to fish some riprap and laydowns. I had two fish pick up a jig and when I set the hook I got my jig back with no trailer. Then my partner pitched in with a rubber worm and pulled a keeper. So at 1:00 we have 4 fish and I am trying to decide what to do. Then I got a short fish on a tube flipping a tree in current, so I decided to run into running slough and see what the water and current looked like. The water looked good, but there was not much current. That idea was not working so we pulled back out into town lake and right away my partner was getting blows on a frog. But everyone missed and would not follow up on anything. We finally sticks a nice 2.5 lbs fish and did not get it up on top. The fish got him rapped up in the weeds and pulled free. I decided we were going to finish our day out in town lake and started working into the back and found clean water and some current. As soon as we hit the clean water I got a nice blow on a frog and stuck him. It turned out to be keeper number 5 and I started feeling better that we had a limit. We had 3 other blows after and and never got a hook into them. I was happy with the day because I fished with a new partner that does not bass fish and he caught two keepers. We ended up with a really small limit, our five fish were 9-12.5ounces. My big fish went 17 1/4″ and weighed 2-13 , I also had a 17″ fish that weighed 1-14 . All my fish were really skinny. The fish that weighed 1-14 ended up dead by the end of the day (I hate to say it but I think it starved to death)
Dietrich/Dietrich 5fish 15lbs
Schultz/Schultz 5fish 13-5.5lbs
Staats/Brown 5fish 9-12.5lbs
Mulnix/Smith 4fish 7-15 lbs
Staats/Southern 3fish 7 lbs
Staats/Werlin 2fish 4-13.5lbs
Big bass Dietrich/Dietrich 3-4lbs
The winner of the tournament was also the ones that had the accident. I don’t know about you but if you have to do a 360 in your boat to catch a 15lb 5 fish limit in July. I QUIT!!!!!!!!!!
Now I am looking forward to two weeks from now and our pool 10 tournament.
