I think most guys just get into the habit of chucking that swim jig and lose focus of what’s going on around them. Not all of the time, but more times than most would like to admit. I’ve been throwing one for the last month or so and it’s easy to turn and burn a swim jig. We all have to rememer to key in on the little things. Are there shad present and if you’re fishing around pads, are there any bluegills sucking bugs off the surface. Birds feeding on the pads means there’s bugs, if there’s bugs, there ‘gills. The Bass won’t be too far behind. The whole circle of life thing….
It’s not always looking for the next place to make a cast. You have to have the mental capacity to process what’s really taking place. You also have to recognize when the color your throwing just isn’t working. If the boat across from you is chucking a solid white swim jig and not catching anything, switch to a bluegill pattern or a black/junebug combo.
Primarily, I’m flipping a tube, worm or creature bait. Most times I’ll resort to a swim jig if they others are failing. I think the guys like Flack who are able to try different approaches do better than most.
Fishing a swim jig is like drinking Beer. Lots of fun, but ya just gotta know when to say when.

We talked about that as well. It seems like a lot of guys are using it as a magic bait and become “one dementional” with it. Yeah you can do a lot of things with it but damn, there is other baits in the box lol
I have to post this quote from Flack, because I thought it was funny…”monsoor has ruined them guys up there”
July 12, 2007 at 9:18 pm #589667I don’t even think it “how”. I know we all think we have our little tricks, I’ve got mine….but… I think its all when and where. Mostly where. Granted they can work almost anywhere some of the time, they typically will work some of the places any time.
On the other hand Pitbull, your buddy is right. Just throw them all away. They don’t work.July 12, 2007 at 9:29 pm #589673Quote:
He told me all about the tournament and one thing he Now my question is to you swim jig freaks…..do ya think you throw it toooooo much
no, just the right amount.
July 12, 2007 at 11:18 pm #589722I agree with Blue Fleck’s analogy about the swim jig. I have to be in the “right place at the right time” and hopefully I’ve got the right color tied on to match the hatch. I only throw it if there’s active feeding going on or there’s agitated bait fish flickering around in the area. To me, because of the smallish size of the bait, it’s a finesse tactic and with any finesse presentation your downsizing your bait trying to duplicate what they’re feeding on. It also is a great follow-up bait if you get a blow-up on a frog because I belelive that once a bass has blown up on that frog you’ve turned a “reaction bite” fish into an active feeder but only for a short period of time so its important to fire right back in there before its mood changes and alot of times they just can’t pass up that small shad or gill imitator that has landed right on their dinner table…
July 13, 2007 at 3:58 pm #589941Fleck, I’ll toss the question back to you a bit…
Good observations on needing to know what’s going on around you…in those situations you mention, how do you fish/swim the jigs?
Swimjigs, senkos or any other ‘bait du jour’ should not be confused with a ‘license for a lobotomy’…it’s still a thinking man’s (or person if you prefer) game…
July 15, 2007 at 8:07 pm #590434Sounds like throwing spinner baits without the spinner, for myself, my arm would be like jello by days end.
