How many guys use a push pole on the river? I know I should probably put this in the outdoor gear, but I am wondering specifically for the river. I am thinking about getting one for going through the slop and pads, and wanted to see how many bass guys carry one in their boat. I felt that posting it hear would probably get a better response from mississippi river bass fisherman..

    Thanks,
    Cade

what kind do you recommend? I don’t want to spend a butt load of money. I normally just use an oar but I’m fishing some pads that are deeper than the thing! That’s where a push pole sounds like it would come in handy..

Just buy a dowel rod from Home Depot and get a duck foot from a local sporting goods retailer. Whole set up for under $20.

That’s what we have in the War Eagle, the Polar Kraft and the 14ft Monark. It works very well. The Bass boat has a 3 piece push pole that slips nicely into the rod locker. No complaints on that one either.

I broke D-nort’s push pole pretending to be a lumberjack. I lost and so did D-nort’s push pole. I replaced it with this one.

You may want to ask him how he likes it. I’m sure he’d like to have his old one back.

I own a few push poles
the best one I have is an 18′ aluminum made by go-devil that is super light and strong—use it all the time there 125.00 but they make a 10 and 12′ that are about 80.
The cheap retractables are nice for saving space, but they retain moisture and sand that cause them to bind—especially in cold weather

Just go to the local high school and get a old or broken pole vault pole. You can’t beat a free pole and they work great.

just had a guy break my 20 year old push pole last time out. so home depot has closet poles for 1.18 per foot and I bought 10 feet of pole which worked great today.

    Cade,

Take a look at the push pole on http://www.dennyssuper30.com/ . It’s all aluminum, can be broke down to fit in a rod locker. It’s a little light but I have it in my boat all of the time. I know it’s more than you wanted to spend but it’s an investment you can use in the future. Assuming you will own a bass boat.

Actually Blue, I dig the new one. It doesn’t extend quite as far, but much sturdier.

Note to everyone… Never let Blue operate your push pole!

    Cade,
A push pole should be required equiptment for the river fisherman buddy. You can make a cheap one with PVC pipe if you need to.

theres a good one at Ace in LAX that I’m going to get that is only $32. It is very classy and telescoping as well. course i’ll still need to buy the foot which is another 12.99, but it will be worth it i think. I almost bought it last week, but spent my money on finesse fishin’ stuff for state!

from my personal experience, the longer the better! when i get the boat stuck in the mud we have down here i find momentum is key. i can stand in the middle of my boat and walk it back which works really well for me.

One thing I can tell you about push poling a boat through the stumps fields is, don’t stand too close to the bow of the boat, and always pay attention to what’s underwater, in front of the boat.

I couldn’t agree more I use a 16′ push pole on my 14′ boat. I can get it moving AND keep it moving thru a slurry

it cost me 12.06 tax included for a ten foot closet pole at Home Depot. and a ten footer has been more then long enough for my 16 foot boat for 18 years. and I don’t use a bill or nothing. just a stick and its more then enough.

you guys make this way too complicated.
