Sloppin’ up Toads on 8

1 year ago today, I was out in my boat with my dad catching fish in eel grass on swim jigs.
Today We decided to make it an annual thing and took the boat (which finally has been fixed) down to the south end of pool 8, in search of some slop fish. The pattern on the pool lately goes VERY well with this area and we found fish to be pretty much everywhere we put our baits!
We worked from point to point to point and caught fish on most points we tried. The one point we fished was all lily pads with clean water access on one side, and dirtier access on the other. The key was that clean water. Also there was good water under the pads, 3-4 feet of it. I hurled a spro all day (10:30-2:00) and caught 8 keepers and a lot of smaller fish as well. My dad through buzzbaits and plastics and struggled, but once we hunkered down into the deep stuff, and I proceeded to land an 18-1/2″, 18″, another 18″, and a 19-1/2″ largemouth, i decided it was time to rig up another spro on my other 7 foot MH rod and let my dad give it a try. It wasn’t long before he got the hang of the baitcaster, and landed a couple nice ones, as well as missing a couple. Overall it was an awesome outing!

I had 5 fish for aprox 16-1/2 lbs. I was weighing my fish, until a fish flopped the scale into the water, and it didn’t seem to work right after that. I did weigh a 3.3 and a 3.4, but couldn’t get a weight on the 19-1/2″ fatty

I’m sure it was well over 4 though.

Overall I’m quite pleased for my first trip back to the river since my motor died back in the beginning of June!

I don’t mean to scare ya here…It got a little hot out

Anyway, This fish was a true hog. One of the most noteable fish of the year so far. at 19-1/2″ and fat, I think this fish would have gone 4-1/4 lbs to 4-1/2 lbs. It was a toad.

Great fish…I’m usually not one of those guys who will fish topwater at every chance…prefer to jig…but frogs are a complete different story…fish tend to attack them with ATTITUDE! and could seriously fish frogs all day long for one/two bits. It’s that addicting to me…

Sounds like a blast…thanks for the photos…and good job getting your dad onto baitcasting…

I enter the dark side once in a while and have a question…… I have a topwater scum frog or whatever it is and it tends to fill with water and sit below the surface half way back on the retrieve is it a bad frog? Wrong stle of retrieve I twitch it back or what? Just curious how you work them frogs guys

Erick. Sometimes the frogs do fill with water. Try to retrieve with the tip of your fishing rod at 11:00 to keep the nose of the frog pointing up.

Thanks Guys. JJ, yeah, I sure hope your’s is as good as mine! I was just tickled to be driving it again. get this, it goes 16.3 MPH now with the new L-U and adjusted carberator. used to get about 14.0 max.

Erick, my spro fills with water every cast. Even a brand new one will get water in it once in a while. as far as working it, spro’s and swamp donkeys have a great walking, spitting, and bobbing action. I basically work the bait like a spook, only 10 times more intense. but you’ll know if you need to slow down. this gets painfull on your arms, wrists and shoulders until you get used to it. it’s a good way to cover water, but if you notice a lot of fish rolling behind the bait, it’s time to slow down and let ’em eat it.
if you haven’t tried a spro bronzeye frog or a swamp donkey from reaction innovations, you should give them a shot sometime. They are a lot heavier than the traditional scumfrogs, and have better action in open water or pads. the key definitely is that walking action.

Dan, you just had to say something that I had no idea what it meant. That was scary when I googled that.
