Well I started all the crap on the other post, so I thought I would be the one to start up some swim jig talk on a post that is actually ment for it. All I was trying to say that was I prefer LW for my swim jig of choice. I will say that one problem with LW is the color selection. I have had alot of success on the colors they have, but I find it strange that they don’t have anything with red in it.

Swim Jig Talk

You know, one thing that most of the swim jig makers have in common is that they are all really nice guys!
I spend a lot of time talking to both Dan Brovarney, and Gordon Coon. Gordon is the RC tackle owner, and I just got off the phone with him earlier. It’s like he said…it’s not the jig, its the fisherman. Regardless of what’s tied on, you have to choose the right presentation and the right color, and know when to put the swim jig down also. when getting a lot of short strikes, I switch to some crazy looking colors. I have found times where they were just nudging a natural or dark color jig, and then I throw a fire tiger or my favorite..shhhhh….hot pink! and you get nailed! But if you just don’t get touched in your best areas, they might have gone deeper and then you gotta fish a flipping jig or senko or try a different retrieve.
One thing you have to think about when selecting the jig that is right for you is what kind of stuff you are going to be fishing. I have found that Brovarney’s are the ultimate jig for coming through grass. With the stuff I fish, These are the jigs that I choose most of the time. RC tackle’s swim jigs are a close second, they are a great jig with some great color patterns that catch fish.
One thing I have found, is that Dave’s tournament tackle swim jigs come through the grass just “OK” but really not that great. Don’t get snagged on a rock or log either, the hooks will literally break off sometimes I do however, love their flipping jigs.
Team supreme swim jigs are not too good imo. The paint flakes off and sometimes gets all gooey. I love their color patterns but their heads are not made to come through the grass.
Booyah makes a decent swim jig, but they do not have hardly any color patterns. They come through grass exceptionally well, i’d like to see a 1/4 oz jig, I’ve only thrown the 1/2, but they ride high in the water collum surprisingly. No need for the rattles though..
Yank’em jigs are great. they have a good head that comes through grass and I like the weed gaurd. I like their flipping jigs a LOT more though.
I have not tried lethal weapon jigs yet, but I am sure I will get around to it eventually. They look like they would catch some fish, but I am not overly impressed with them to the point where I would put down my brovarney’s and RC’s. I will get around to trying them though, I like to try everything before I form a true opinion.
In my honest opinion, I don’t really like the looks of the BPS monsoor jigs. I’m doubting those are the jigs he throws anyway, but they don’t look to have as much quality as the other jigs I’ve seen.
these are just my opinions
Thanks,

I have tried alot of differant manufactures and I have to say that Dan and Outkast tackle make some of the best swim jigs out there. I remember when we use to use just regular stanley jigs for swim jigs, this was many years ago and it was not called swim jiggin. These young guys are very lucky to have such awesome tackle to use. Cade keep your open mind about things, it will take you along way in fishing and life.

I have tried a lot of swim jigs and always end up back at the lethal weapons. RC Tackle were my jig of choice for a bit due to how they come through thick stuff, but IMO the skirts stink, they get boogered up after a bit of use. I do have to say that Gordon is a hoot to deal with and a nice guy (on the phone anyway).
As far as Brovarney, I will be careful because one bad word gets the whole forum after you. But I personally picked up a couple at a sport show and tried them and they seemed OK but after a couple of fish my eye was bent and it affected the travel of the jig. I melted it down to see and there was an adaptor in there which busted out. I did see now they are going to a custom bent which should help. My buddy bought some Yank-ems and they looked like a carbon copy of the Lethal Weapons, that of course was just looking, not actually using them.June 26, 2007 at 4:17 pm #584348Brovarney did get the custom hook made and in place and for the record it works great. In defense of the old style adaptor, it was a slight fault, once in a great while I would get one opened up. I throw them on braid a large percentage of the time though and that puts alot of punishment on them. I have a batch of new ones and am really happy with them. The hooks a are sharp yet strong and don’t bend open very easy at all. Thats a plus when throwing them on braid line.
As for all of the other jigs….They are all nice too. Like someone said, its 90% whos throwing them that will give you the performance. Its not just the jig that dictates how it comes through or over the weeds, its alot of how you swim them through or over all of that. I guess it comes down to customer service and a relationship with the makers. Being able to make a call and get what you need quickly is as important as anything. Brovarney does great at that.June 26, 2007 at 4:26 pm #584357I use the Brovarneys, great baits, and hey they are only trying to improve them. I have caught a ton of fish on them, and I gotta say they are amoungst the most weedless lures that I have ever used. I always have one rigged and ready.

Quoted for truth. That’s what puts Brovarney Baits a step above. Listens to what the customer wants, and the turn around time is awesome.

Exactly!!
June 26, 2007 at 5:40 pm #584407Amen to Custom Lures Lethal Weapons…basically all I throw. I’ve caught so many fish on his swim jigs as well as his rock jigs. In my opinion, both styles are essential on the river. Owner hooks, hand tied, custom colors of your own design…Scott does a great job.

Come on…. nobody jumped on you.

Just so you know why I deleted your post. It didn’t lend to the conversation. Posting straight links is a “no-no” on your part unless it lends to the conversation. Paying sponsors and advertisers are the ones who keep the lights on here at IDA. Links that contribute to the conversation are welcome unless they are blantant attempts at drawing viewers away or they appear to be ads for business. Since you admitted you have ties with Lethal Weapon, I looked at the link as an ad for them. I’ll politely ask you to refrain from doing that again. All conversations about Lethal Weapon, and any other competitors of Brovarney are fine.
Since we have that clear, “game on!”
June 26, 2007 at 6:19 pm #584429Scott makes a great jig, I have no complaints at all with his jigs. Lethal Weapon’s catch fish.
jakPosts: 76June 27, 2007 at 3:50 pm #584731Cade I agree with your assessments of the various swim jigs. I found too that the team supreme jigs do not come through the grass well. As to the Monsoor jig.I bought some last year because of the price. When the pike are active you can go through a boatload of jigs in a day. Any way, my first observation was the small wire hook and how it would pull larger fish out of heavy slop and would it limit my trailer choices. Now in my second season of fishing them and hundreds of bass caught. I really like them. My trailer of choice is a sizmic toad both the larger and the Jr. I believe my hooking percentage is better with this jig than the others I have fished.
June 27, 2007 at 8:15 pm #584907Jak, I am not doubting that at all. Like I said, I have never fished the monsoor jigs but have seen a few up close and the heads look kind of bubbly and the paint doesn’t look very nice on the ones I saw.
I also forgot to mention that the All terrain jigs are also pretty nice. I’ve fished them before and they are pretty good at coming through the grass. They have decent colors as well. Outcast look nice but the thing with several companies, is that they all look almost exactly the same, head, hook, and guard wise. That is when I just start buying jigs for the skirt patterns. I’ve found a few companies that make some quality swim jigs, and I buy from all of them, like I said, I am exceptionally partial to the brovarneys, however when I need jigs fast, and they have the color I need, I won’t hesitate to buy from other companies to see whats out there.
June 27, 2007 at 8:19 pm #584911“Sizmic Toad” as a swim jig trailer…great idea!
Now I have a use for the box of Sizmics I was going to throw out.jakPosts: 76June 27, 2007 at 10:18 pm #584943Jimt, When using the sizmic as a swim jig trailer. I cut off the head at the ‘shoulders’ and then on the larger I taper the ‘shoulders’. 2 weeks ago on pool 4 my partner in the back of the boat was fishing our usual set-up with the sizmic trailer and I in the front of the boat was trying various single and double tailed trailers. He was ahead of me 10 to 2 when I switched back to the sizmic. I passed him up in short order. They seem to perform well for me. Also Uncle Josh has developed a new trailer with the sizmic legs but with a smaller grub-type body.
