The past two weekends I have been able to get out and do some quality bass fishing. On Memorial weekend, my girlfriend and I fished some local lakes for both largies and smallies. It was very interesting to see both the largemouth and smallmouth in the same areas, but at different stages of spawn. The smallies were starting to finish up, while the largies were just moving up. We caught fish on skakey heads, sencos, and jerkbaits. The key to catching fish on the jerkbaits was constantly switching colors. Some of the smallies were so picky regarding the color of your lure. On the weekend, we managed about 100 bass. Nothing big, but a lot of 14-16 inch fish.

This weekend was a different story. We finally found the big fish. We caught these fish using the same presentations the weekend before, but we did find a good topwater bite as well. We found a nice area were the big post spawn females were hanging out, and we got several blow-ups using a prop bait. A lot of blow-ups, but not a lot of hookups for some reason. On the weekend, my buddy and I ended up with 135 bass. It was great watching these big smallies come up and eat a topwater bait. Here are some pictures for you guys.

Last one. Biggest fish of the weekend. We thought it was around 5 or so, she still hadn’t spawned yet. It looked like she was ready to pop.

It was a great weekend, but believe it or not the numbers and size were actually down from last year. If the weather would have cooperated and been sunny and calm, I would have bet we could have caught about 250-300 (like we did last year). Now is the time to go and fish the northeast side. If you are going out to different lakes, the fish are in different stages of spawn on each lake.

I do have a question though. This weekend I saw at least 5 beds with big fish on it (over 3 pounds), but we never saw or caught the smaller males. Were the 3-4 lbers. the males protecting the fry? or do the males move off for awhile and then come back?

I will be back out fishing for the smallies this weekend, so I will give the results when I return.

    Ben
