Trolling Motors, Pool Nine & The Little Mrs.

I posted this on another thread, but I just thought I’d get all the direction I could before I make a purchase.

    Here it goes:

I was on pool nine Saturday , then as I was putting my trolling motor down ’cause I saw some smallies breaking water, I notice that the trolling motor had melted into my Gator Mount … -I just had to try anyways- She was dead. Dead, dead, dead . So, being that I had money in the pocket and had driven four hours, I went fishing anyways .

So, I used the big motor as a trolling motor, firing ‘er up now and then to get where I wanted to go…

Long story short, I was in few areas that were great, but I didn’t catch anything, well all shorties, let me tell ya, hey . So, what’s up with the bass here?

So, after I’ve run out of patience, using the big motor and all, taking my daily inventory, thanking God for all that I have, I get mama on the blower (easy, boys), and I tell’er what’s goin’ on… She says that I should “use your best judgement. ” Then she says, “have you noticed that every time you go fishin’ something breaks? ” (I’m thinkin’, yeah.) She then suggest I may wanna “pray about that for direction. ” Yeah, direction to the bow mount store .

So, I got x amount of $; later, when I’m done working today, I’m goin’ a lookin’ for a new trolling motor .

Here’s the deal: Do I buy the Motor Guide or Minkota I want, or do I buy a leftover Evinrude which never breaks, for $300.00 rather than one of the other two for $800.00?

I guess I need to use my “best judgement.”

Hey, how’s your “best judgement” regarding this?

    Thanks ,

    OnTheWater

PS Yes, God seems to have seen fit to test me at nearly my every turn. The way I look at it is that I’m tested more ’cause there are those who aren’t ready yet to deal with such tests -hey, it was just a thought !

Buy whatever Minn Kota fits your budget and be done with the whole deal. Hands down better than any others out there.

Hmm. Luck. Yep, I just had some!

I went to Anchors Aweigh last night to get a new trolling motor, and I just happen to have my dead one in the truck.

Well, it turns out that they can replace the motor and all in the lower unit of the trolling motor!

So, after I’ve relace the power switch, the cable and now the motor, I have, essentially, a new trolling motor!

Ah, finally good news for the pocket.

Maybe I’ll see yous this weekend, hey.

What brand is your current motor and how much did you have to spend?

onthewater…kind of in the same boat as you. Fishing on Pool 9 and 10 last weekend and my trolling motor decides to junk on me. Speed control went out and the nice constant humming coming from the top covor. Was told later circutboard going out…Yep.. motorguide…anyhow..right now waiting to hear back from Anchors Aweigh myself… Here is my question (though I know the answer already), I would mind trying Minn kota…but prefer the Motor guide foot pedal…Why can’t they make them so they are interchangable…Or are they??????? I’d buy new..but me poor…….

    The brand is Motor Guide.

Four weeks ago, I bought a cable: $21.00.
Six weeks ago, I bought a power switch for foot peadle: $8.00.
Yesterday, new lower unit. $150.00 for part & I believe $30.00 for labor.

    So $209 and I’m OnTheWater.

Sell it for $300 and invest it into a 74lb Maxxam. Then you can change your name to “Stayin on the water”.
Actually I am glad things are back in order. When are you comming back over this way?

I would have to agree with JC on this one- the 74 lb maxxum is a great motor- “infinite” speed control, great in weeds, plenty of power in current and lasts all day long. Just my 2 cents. I guess economically you probably made the right choice for now, time will tell. good luck.

Agree! I replaced my older trolly motor last year (could have repaired, but didn’t WANT to…) I put the Maxxum 74 on my boat as well based on others feedback… I feel like I have a NEW boat… great control, terrific in the weeds, and as for the fast spring current… WHAT current!

    MinnKota makes a fine motor!

Yeah, I could have bought a new one… There’s no doubt about that, but… let’s see. Where’s that list? Oh, here it is.

Two kids, 14 and 20. You give them a $20.00 and there like, “what’s that?”
    Soccer camp.
    New roof.
    New transmission for truck.
Wife and kid in Virginia currently.
May need new blower for air cond. in Va.
    New garage door (car).
    New garage service door.
    New garage-entrance-to-the-house-door.
    New light fixtures.
    New sump pump.
    New used bass boat.
Uh, that was since December and all of which was paid for out of pocket… Now, I’m essentially just about out of $ for the year.

So, I saved about $600.00 dollars.

I’ll be up there not this weekend, but the following week. I’ll get there Tuesday night and prefish Weds. Thurs. & Fri. Tournament is Saturday.

    Thanks,

GREAT List! And, I understand your situation better this year than in the past as my wife is staying at home now with my 7 month old son… Sincerely, I am happy you were able to fix it, cause the most important part is being on the water!

You should have ended that string with-

    staying on the water…. priceless.
I feel the pain as well, but it sure is easy for us to spend your money for you, much easier than spending mine.

JC- what tourney on pool 10? It looks like I will be up and could fish if able, but more than likely would just check out the weigh in and watch you collect.
Let me know when the weigh in is, also shoot me the times and if the tourney is still open. Thanks.

This is just a club tourney out of pool 10. I fish many different circuits and enjoy the competition. The club gives me a break from the competition and allows me to go out and have fun. If I fair well then I have bragging rights. There is something to be said for these types of tourneys.
I will be collecting my check at the next club meeting however we will be at the marquette boat ramp around 3:00 on sunday if you are in the neighborhood.
My next big competition is the next Marys Tournament in August followed by 2 tourneys on Lake Pokegama fishing the Team Supreme. Followed closely by the MN State federation tourney on pools 5a ,6, and 7. This tourney I really enjoy because I will have the oppertunity to fish with many friends I consider second to none. If I qualify it will only be a bonus. I look forward to having a drink with John Sears while I am up there. Maybe if I keep the drinks comming I he will tell me where the really big ones are. My money is on him this tourney. Its up in his neck of the woods.
