Today was a great day for me as I got to fish with my two favorite fishing partners–my dad and my son. We had a mixed bag but caught more bass than anything, so in the bass forum she goes.
Pops was in town this weekend from Fort Pierre, SD and we spent the day on the water here on the Mississippi’s Pool 8. He doesn’t get over here too often, and the past few times the weather has been terrible and the fishing was just as bad. Today was a different story.
The first fish of the day was a sheep caught pulling a glass shad in 5 feet of water. The next fish, a largemouth, was a bit of a surprise when it hit the shad rap while we were trolling for ‘eyes. The bass pictured below was a very ragged 16 incher.
We pulled the cranks around a while longer with no luck so I started throwing a blue gill swim jig and a white spinner bait while Pops kept hammering the sheep with crawlers in search of the almighty walleye (keep in mind he’s from SD). I picked up a half dozen LM–a couple 14-15″ and then some shorties.
We changed location and still were doing well on the LM when I caught the northern pictured below. He hit the spinner bait two times on one retrieve but never fully committed. The next cast he pecked at the lure and then finally engulfed it when I stopped the retrieve and let it fall. My first slimer of the year!
The good wife called and let me know it was time to come home and pick up my almost five-year-old son, Gavin, and let him spend a little time on the water with Dad and Papa Rees. We ran back to the landing and I went up the road to get my little guy while Pops promised not to sink my boat. A bit later I was back at the river and while we were waiting to be picked up, Gavin cast his bobber and jig out and landed the little large mouth pictured above. His first LM ever!
Pops was all smiles when he pulled up to shore as he had boated two walleyes while I was away. He was cranking the glass shads in 7 fow. The first was a 14 and the one pictured below was a chubby 18.
The three Rees guys put in another couple hours on the river and had a good time. We totaled about a dozen bass, two walleye, a few pike, several sheepies, knocked a dogfish off with the net (no tears about that one), and too many smiles and laughs to count.
