This adage if from the Lindners; “The bass spawn starts when the crabapples bloom…the spawn is over when the lilacs bloom”. I’ve used this over the years and it is a reasonable predictor. I’m looking out my window at both the crabapple and lilacs are in bloom at the same time. That says something about the screwed-up spring and why the fish can’t figure out what to do!

When My allergies get really bad…..I know the spawn is going strong.
My allergies have not peaked yet…..so the spawn can’t be over yet!
May 8, 2007 at 1:49 am #568854It is completely screwed up this year. I have found fish on beds in some lakes and in similar lakes of the same depth they are still sitting off of the first break. My dad always told me the crappie and white bass are running when the lilacs bloom. This year we can throw every thing out the window.
May 8, 2007 at 2:31 am #568886The spawn has hardly started yet..other than males fanning beds here on pool 8. I noticed a much greater ammount of big fish a couple weeks ago up shallow which seems pretty wierd. I know they weren’t spawning out then, but they were about ready to. At that time I was consistantly catching 3.5 lbers in less than 2 feet of water. suddenly within the last few days, the big fish have moved and it is all 2 or 2.5 lb males sitting on the beds. I think some of it may have had something to do with the water levels dropping? The weeds also have grown very thick very fast. The river is a pretty wierd and inconsistant place right now. The smallies I have caught all appear to be prespawners yet. I found some tonight tucked up behind stumps and other wood with good current rolling off of it in pretty skinny water. I caught 2 fatties but they didn’t have any length; 14″ and 15″ were the 2 biggest…Their red eyes and girth tell me that they may be thinking about spawning behind that wood very soon. they were pretty stacked up in this area, I just didn’t have any options, as far as means of water travel to get to the good parts of the slough.
I agree it has been a pretty wierd spring. just as long as they spawn out within the next week or 2 I will be perfectly happy. I need them to get into transition mode so I can stack ’em up for my next tournamentMay 8, 2007 at 8:34 pm #569215I would say they are spawning right now. I caught two off the beds last weekend and one had a bloody tail and bottom fin.
May 9, 2007 at 1:15 am #569296I caught this good fish off a bed today. It did not have a beat up tail at all. Probably pushing 3 lbs. I don’t know if it was a female or not, but you would think it would be more roughed up if it was a male. This fish was in perfect condition. I used a senko to entice it off the bed. It was sitting in about 10″ of water on a little rock pile with a a ton of weed mats forming around..You can see what I’m talking about in the background. All I know is that catching that fish off a bed was an awesome feeling
May 9, 2007 at 2:06 am #569315nice fish, and nice picture(only because i took it), man i was pumped up seeing that fish suck that senko in, nice job dude, and if we see that again together, i am gonna catch it

May 9, 2007 at 12:03 pm #569448where were your 3 lbers last night?? I said “probably pushing” That means probably more like 2-3/4..it wasn’t a hog but I don’t think it was a male either….
