After spending a week up North Battling weather conditions and a slow walleye bite, I returned to a favorite trib. to the Root River. On my first cast I caught a 12-13 inch smallmouth! Man did that feel nice after catching fish on a 1 fish every 2-3 hours schedule! Note for smallmouth enthusiasts: This fish completely hit on the surface as well as the next three or 4 fish. I was simply twitching a # 9 Original floating rapala with a stop and go retrieve when they would sneak up and smash it!
A friend who hits the smallies hard, reported having a 40 fish day while I was up North. This is a wonderful sign! I personally have not had a high number day wading all Season. My best might have pushed a dozen. One thing I noticed Sunday and after discussing my friends fine outing was they have started to hit the Texas Rigged Crawfish as well!
When the leaves litter the surface, frustrating the retrieve of your favorite spinner or rapala, head to the bottom with either night crawlers or plastics! A very good chance to catch a Piggy like “Gianni” demonstrated on the Cedar River! Until then enjoy a good variety of presentations, catching aggressive Fall smallmouth!
If interested, send me a private and We’ll hook up for some Fall smally action!
Reminder: Trout and smallmouth season is now Catch and release only! For trout you must use barbless hooks on designated trout waters!
Keep the rods bendin’!!!
